I love posts like this because I get to talk about one of my favorite topics and then share projects that illustrate the topic. I enjoy sharing each individual project on the blog, but I also enjoy sharing the tips and tricks I have learned over the years throughout all the projects. These tips and tricks are golden because they really are what has saved us so much time and money with our projects. Today, I am screaming from the mountaintops (or the corn fields here in Iowa) that you must keep all your scrap wood from your projects!
If you keep the scraps, you will save so much time and money on future projects when inspiration strikes. Now, I know there will be big projects that require you to head out to the home improvement stores to get wood for, but the scraps from those projects are so important to keep. Another way to save a ton of money on wood is to pick it up at yard sales and your local Restore. Any time we find wood for free or inexpensive, we pick it up. Scrap pieces come in all shapes and sized and your projects will have different needs, but even the tiniest scrap pieces can be turned into beautiful art to hang in your home.
Doing DIY projects puts me in my happy place. Not only do I love the projects themselves, but I love the possibilities that come with all the extra supplies that remain. We have completed many DIY projects with scrap wood. Many. Today, I am sharing 10 Cool Wood Projects that we have done with all the pieces we have kept from other projects.

If you are like me, you save all the pieces of wood you can get. This means that I save not only wood in its form, but also wood pieces from furniture. Wood table legs, organ panels and chair backs are great pieces to keep for cool wood projects. These candlesticks were made from wood posts and wood table legs we kept from previous projects. They cost us nothing and we have beautiful wood candlesticks that I have used in a lot of our decor and tablescapes.

Cool wood projects using scraps are so satisfying because you know you are saving time and money you would have spent on going to get new wood. Searching through your pile to find pieces that you can turn into new things is so fun too. We made wood caddies with scrap wood. They can be used for so many things and they make great gifts too! The handles on the caddies were made from broken handles off garden and other tools that we knew we could repurpose!

We pulled this old dresser out of a barn. It has seen better days, but I saw all the potential it had. I knew we had scrap wood that we could make into boxes to fit into the “shelves” of this dresser.

When I needed to come up with an office project, I went to my scrap wood pile and found a good-sized piece that I could build on. This desk organizer was a great mix of scrap wood pile and found pieces coming together.

I pick up barn wood whenever I can find it. We have turned barn wood into many things for our home. MANY THINGS! A piece of barn wood is great on its own, or use it as a back drop and add to it.
Repurposed Arrow Art
I love tiered trays, but they are usually way too expensive in the stores for my budget. If you have a wood pile, you can make your own and customize it to exactly what you need. Old spindles from another project worked perfect between the boxes.

This farmhouse bench was made from a leaf of a dining room table and pieces from the wood pile. We put it together and painted it all white and distressed it. You would never know it wasn’t always this way.

Old fencing can become a beautiful feature wall in your home! This fencing was going to the dump, but I rescued it and we were able to create a beautiful wall for FREE! Being able to score this much reclaimed for our wood pile was like winning the lottery! 🙂

Wood boxes are so great for so many things and having a scrap wood pile means I can make them whenever I need them.
