Decorating your home should be fun and it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. You can make your home exactly how you want it without spending a lot of money. All it takes is some creativity, the right shopping techniques, and knowing what to buy. Shopping thrift stores is one way that will ensure you get the decor you want without spending a lot of money. You will be amazed by what you can find in a thrift store to decorate your home. Today, I am going to share 5 tips for buying thrifted decor to ensure you are getting the most out of every shopping trip and decor purchase at the thrift store.
5 Tips For Buying Thrifted Decor
- Give It A Good Look
When you are shopping for thrifted decor, no matter what it is, make sure to look over the piece very well. Make sure there aren’t any missing pieces, broken parts, or chips. For me, when I am picking up vintage decor pieces, a lot of times there will be some chipping or wear. I welcome those flaws when I find vintage decor. When I am picking up items that aren’t vintage, I make sure and give them a good inspection before I buy them. I have learned the hard way with this one. There is nothing worse than getting home with your new decor and finding it is missing something or it is broken/chipped. A lot of thrift stores do not have a return policy so you are out the money you spent. Give every item a good inspection.

See The Potential
The best way to shop for thrifted decor is to always look for potential. Most of the time, when you are shopping for thrifted decor you will have to look for what an item could be with a little tweaking. Sometimes the “tweaking” is simple. Sometimes, you just have to add a picture hanger to something you want to hang on the wall. Other times, you will find a piece of furniture that needs to be repaired, painted, and waxed. No matter what it is, always look for the potential in pieces when you are shopping thrift stores.
- Keep An Open Mind
To go along with potential, you have to always have an open mind when shopping for thrifted decor. Something may not be the exact match for what you are looking for. But, if you add paint, stain, and/or reconfigure it in some way, etc. you will come away with something very similar to your original inspiration.
- Don’t Lose Sight Of Your Budget
Thrift shopping is just like any other shopping. Many people are a little looser with their spending at a thrift store because it is a thrift store. They automatically think that are getting a killer deal because they are in a thrift store. But, I am here to tell you that isn’t true at all. You can overspend at a thrift store just like any other retail store. You need to always keep your budget in mind. Stick to that budget. Not only will this help your account balance at the end of the month, but it will ensure you are only buying those items you really truly love.

Look In Every Aisle
Every thrift store usually has some organization to it. There is usually an area or place for every kind of item in the store. The problem is that they don’t have the staff that other retail stores have. So, when someone sets something down in a different area, it will take a lot longer for it to be found and put where it belongs. Knowing this, make sure you peruse every aisle in a thrift store. It only takes seconds to walk through them. You will be amazed at what decor pieces you will find in different aisles where people had set them down.
