Last year, I found a beautiful desk at a yard sale. The owner had stripped it so she could paint it and never got around to it so she was selling it. I loved the desk and was so happy it was all prepped and ready for me to take it home and paint it. I am sad to report that this past winter, I noticed the wood on the top of it started to split pretty bad. I knew I would have to add a new desk to my list of things to look for during my spring and summer yard sale hunts. This painted desk was destined to happen and I am excited to share it with you.
About a month ago, I came across this Empire style desk.
Of course, the hardware drew me in, but I also loved all the storage in this desk. It has four more drawers than my last desk and I can always use more storage. The top of this desk was not in great condition (but I didn’t think it was horrible) and that is why the owner told me she was only asking $10 for it.
$10?
I’ll take it!
The first thing I did was sand down the top. Then, I stained it a dark color.
The rest of the painted desk got a couple of coats of “Elegance” from Country Chic Paint.
I did take some sand paper to the edges and corners to rough it up a little bit.

As soon as I put the painted desk in its spot, I started filling the drawers. And, I actually have extra drawer space! I know it will not take me long to fill them, but it is such a luxury to have all the extra storage. The chair I have at the desk is old and fabulous, but we can’t seem to get the spindles on the legs to stay in tact. We have glued and glued them, but it isn’t working. I am going to have to replace it and find something great to do with this chair.
I was really lucky to find a desk that I not only needed, but that was better than the one I had previously. You really can find things you “need” at yard sales. You just have to be persistent and keep going. Trust me. It does happen. You would be amazed how many great things you can find for your home while you are out yard saling.
Would you work on this desk?
If you don’t have time to paint a desk, I found some cute options online:

Your desk looks fantastic! I have been looking at purchasing a desk; however, you have me thinking that I might like to find a desk and refinish it. Thanks for sharing.
Your welcome Jennifer!!! Good luck in your search. The hunt is half the fun!
Such a pretty desk! I love how you transformed it! Those pulls are fantastic too!
The pulls are amazing! I lucked out that they were all there!
Love it! Great color and finish choices.
Thank you Susan!
I love the stain/paint combo
Wow. Looks great! Is that a laminate on that desk? Did you just paint over or remove? I picked up a Lane Cedar chest with laminate on the outside, the inside is perfect. Some of the laminate is coming off at the bottom, and I’m thinking I might need to remove it all.
This is beautiful. What a dreamy and serene little space.
Thank you!
