This White Chest Dresser Makeover took me some time to figure out how I wanted to tackle it. The cabinet alone had me stumped when I saw it.
At first glance, I thought it was a dresser.
A dresser that had a few issues and needed some work.
Then I noticed the bottom of it.
It had to be an old kitchen cabinet.
It was kitchen cabinet depth, it had the cabinet base on the bottom, but yet, the sides were “finished”??
Was it a stand-alone cabinet?
The right side had a horrible patch job so it must have been attached to another cabinet at some time??
The lady I bought it from said she used it in her kitchen.
For that and all other reasons I mentioned, I am calling this a kitchen cabinet in its previous life.
For me, I thought it would make a beautiful chest of drawers.
To start the transformation, I had Matt cut the base off.
Then, I cleaned it and sanded it. The paint came off really well, but not fully.
I was okay with that.
When I sanded the drawers, this appeared on one of the drawers.
Green??
I have never seen that before. The other drawers didn’t have this much green on them, but I noticed that there used to be handles on these drawers (another reason I am calling it a kitchen cabinet).
The green drawer didn’t scare me and the fact that I couldn’t get all that horrible paint off of the rest of the cabinet didn’t bother me.
I went ahead and stained the outside a dark color.
Then, I painted the drawers a soft gray color and added Antiquing Wax from Country Chic Paint on them.
I LOVE the patina the stain and the left over paint in the crevices gave the piece.
I added rustic knobs from Hickory Hardware.
They are painted and have the dark metal look around them. Perfect for this piece.
Like I have always said, “perfect” and I don’t do well together and sometimes when a project doesn’t come out how I planned, I like the alternative better.
This was one of those projects.
The imperfections give it charm, character and something to talk about.

When my daughter saw this piece, she asked me if I bought it. I told her “no” and she said, “Oh, it looks like you got it at TJ Maxx.”
Love that girl.
This White Chest Dresser has claimed a new identity. It was always meant to be a chest of drawers. 🙂 It is now rustic, full of storage and has loads of charm and character.
Much better!

Lindsay, I ditto what your daughter said. That is just the coolest rustic shabby chic dresser! You’d never know it used to be a kitchen cabinet. Love it!
Thank you so much Marie!
WOW! I would have mistook it for a dresser to begin with as well! This is such a neat little cabinet! It looks like something you would pay a lot of money for at Joss & Main or something! Well Done!
