This side table makeover was part of a themed makeover I did with a group of my blogging friends. This theme for this particular month was “outdoors”. I started brainstorming outdoor furniture pieces we could put together, but then thought about all of the projects sitting in our garage waiting for a makeover. I decided to put a hint of “outdoor” into a side table makeover.
This side table had seen better days when my dad picked it up at a yard sale for me. He knows I love a good makeover and he thought this was a great candidate.
He was right.
When I was taking the “before” pictures, I could not find the top of the table. It had been broken off, but it was still intact. From the marks on the left side of the table, I think it used to be a part of a vanity.
Since the shell of the side table was in such great condition, it was a perfect piece to do a makeover that incorporates both stain and paint.
The veneer on the front of the drawers had to be taken off. To do this, I lay a wet towel over it for a few hours (sometimes over night depending on the piece) and once I remove the towel, I can peel the veneer right off. Easy squeezy. (You can find my full post about how easy it is to do this HERE.)

Products Used In This Side Table Makeover:
Fusion Mineral Paint in “Champlain”
Flower Paper (found similar paper here)
After the veneer was off the drawers, I sanded them.
I used Minwax Stain in “Dark Walnut” for the drawer fronts and painted the outer shell of the side table with Fusion Mineral Paint in “Champlain”.
The mix of wood and paint is so yummy. Even better…. I was able to salvage the original hardware. They were in great condition and they were all there. #score
I finally found the top piece after some digging around in the garage. I had to sand it and stain it with Minwax Stain in “Dark Walnut”. It came out beautifully!
So, where is the “outdoor” in this makeover you ask?
Inside the drawers of course!
This summer, we have had so many great flowers bloom in our yard. It is so fun picking them to bring into the house so I thought these drawers lined with flower paper would be a great way to add an “outdoor” vibe.
This table is stunning and I couldn’t be happier that I decided to make over something we already had.
I have been picking up these fun mugs at TJ Maxx. The last few times I have been in there, I have found new words. I have three so far and at only $3 each, I am happy to bring them home. My kids even get excited to search for them at the store. Anything that makes my kids happy to go to TJ Maxx is a good thing. Right?! 😉
I haven’t moved this side table since I put it in our back porch to take pictures. As I walk past it, I really like it there. Sometimes just adding a new piece to a room can make it feel like a new space. As we are planning our porch makeover, this end table makeover will make me feel like we are getting the job done faster than we really are. 🙂
