I always get asked how I find the pieces I do and how do I come up with the ideas to make them over. The easy answer is that I pick up pieces that I love if they are a good price. Sometimes I have an idea for their makeover when I see them and other times, they have to sit in our garage for some time before a light-bulb moment goes off and I can see the potential. This thrift store table was a no-brainer. It was only $3 and had so much potential to become a perfect round end table for a space.
I get asked all the time how I decorate our home without spending a ton of money and still make it full of charm and character. My biggest tip for decorating the home of your dreams on a tight budget it to shop thrift stores and yard sales. I can walk around every room in our home and tell you that 90% of the decor came from a thrift store, yard sale or barn sale. When we bought our first house, we were on a very tight budget, but I wanted to decorate it like I saw in magazines and on TV.
Since our budget wasn’t going to afford me to do that, I had to get creative. I had to find a way to decorate our home without leaving our bank account empty. Fast forward a few years, a new home and a bigger budget, but I still wanted to decorate this way. I was hooked on having a beautiful home while still putting money in the bank.
Today, I am going to show you one of the easiest ways to transform a piece of thrift store furniture to fit your home and style.
I found this table at a thrift store for $3! That is less than a cup of coffee at some coffee shops!!! You can never walk into a furniture store and get a real wood table for $3. That’s why I love shopping this way.
When I saw the table, the bright blue color did not speak to me at all, but I looked right past that and saw all the detail this vintage, wood table had. The shape of the table is unique and the details around the edge and on the legs were too good to pass up.

When I got it home, I knew a pretty gray color would highlight all the features and make the round end table stand out in all the best ways. I chose Hurricane Gray from Dixie Belle Paint.
When I paint a piece like this, I have to bring out my HomeRight Finish Max Paint Sprayer. This tool is essential if you are going to DIY your home’s decor and save a ton of money in the process. The round end table has so much detail in the legs that it would have taken me days to paint it by hand. I also wouldn’t get the coverage I wanted if I painted it by hand.
I thought I would share some tips we have learned over the years using our HomeRight Paint Sprayers.
First, we always put the piece we are painting up on a table. This way, we are able to see every nook and cranny so every inch gets painted.
Second, we always pour the paint we are using through a strainer as it goes into the sprayer’s cup. This ensures the paint is smooth and will not clog up the sprayer as we use it.
Third, we always add a bit of water to the paint. The is important if you are working with a thicker paint for sure. It makes the paint thinner to it comes through the hose and nozzle easier.
Last, we stir the paint and water really well with a paint stirrer on the end of a drill.
Now, it’s painting time!
I like painting certain furniture pieces by hand, but the finish the HomeRight Sprayer gives is amazing. It is smooth and flawless. There are no brush strokes and every inch gets covered in the flawless finish.
Here is a short video to show you how well the sprayer worked on this table:
In less than thirty minutes, we had the entire table painted!
Look at it now!! It doesn’t even look like the same piece. I put a matte top coat on the top of the table to help preserve it.
This table looks nothing like the bright blue table I picked up at the thrift store. No one would even guess that I only paid $3 for it either. (It will be our little secret.)
The details that drew me to this round end table in the first place definitely stand out now… in a good way. The bright blue paint masked all of the pretty curves and details this table had to offer.
This table is perfect now. It is full of character and charm and it has a great story to go along with it.
