The master bedroom makeover is not done, but I wanted to share how far we have come since the COVID-19 crisis hit and because I am getting a lot of questions about it when I post photos from our bedroom on social media. I will be updating this post when I am able to get out and find the things we still need for the makeover. This master bedroom makeover was a long process, even before the pandemic. We hit many road bumps along the way, but we are happy with the outcome so far. It looks a little bare on the walls and I need to find another dresser, but we are grateful for the progress.
Here’s a little background about the makeover.
Like all parents, having kids usually means you are the last on the list. The kids’ wants and needs always come first. I wanted to change that for Matt and I in 2020. I want to make “us” a priority. It is important for the kids to see mom and dad making themselves a priority and putting themselves just a little higher on the list. Making our bedroom a cozy retreat after a long day seemed like heaven to me and Matt was happy to get started too.
When we were talking about this, I immediately thought about our bedroom. It has been years since we have done anything to our bedroom, so starting the new year and new priority off with a master bedroom makeover seemed like a great place to start. Since we just finished Gabrielle’s teen girl’s bedroom makeover, I am in the bedroom makeover mood and starting planning some new ideas for our bedroom.
The last time I did anything to our bedroom was when I did a mini budget bedroom makeover. I didn’t change much in the room, but added some new bedding and pillows. It did give the room a refresh, but it wasn’t a dramatic change. Check out that post to see what our bedroom looked like before we started this makeover.
This time around, I wanted an entirely new look. When that is happening, I always start with paint. I knew that I wanted to go with creamy whites and wood tones in our bedroom this time around so I chose “Cable Knit” from Nautica paint. This color is the perfect creamy white color. It is not yellow or beige. It is just a creamy color that brightened our room instantly. I should mention here too that we painted the ceiling a fresh coat of white paint. Whenever we do a bedroom makeover, we always paint the ceilings. You may not think it needs it, but the fresh white paint on the ceiling makes a big difference.
The next thing we had to tackle was the closet door. Our closet door frame wasn’t even attached to the wall. The doorknob was missing and since it was a bi-fold door, it took up way too much real estate in our small bedroom when it was open. I love our solution. We made a DIY Closet Door With Sliding Door Hardware that was so much better than anything we could have bought in a store. I shared the entire project and tutorial. Make sure to check out that post if you are looking for a great option for a closet door.
Once the closet door was done, I started picking out a new bed. The bed was a nightmare. I shared the entire story on my Instagram page. Hopefully, you are following me there. I share all the behind the scenes stuff over there. To make a long story short, I ordered a bed from Amazon and they lost 2/3 of the bed. All we ended up with was the foot board. UGH! Then, all of the other places I had found the bed were sold out of it and they didn’t know when they would get them back in.
I finally found the bed we wanted, but it was going to take weeks to get here. It was my only option. Everything else was on hold until we got the bed in because the rug had to go under the bed, we needed to measure where to put the sconces once the headboard was in place and I didn’t want to get the new bedding out of the package until the new bed was up and the new mattress was on the bed. We had sold the old headboard we had, so we were sleeping on our old mattress on the floor for a month. It wasn’t ideal, but we survived and it and it is a memory we will always remember. 🙂
While I waited on the bed, I started browsing for rugs.
We have never had a rug under our bed, but since our new bed was going to be up on legs, I wanted to put a rug underneath it. I chose this rug from Boutique Rugs. I wanted something lighter under the bed and something soft for our feet when we get out of the bed. This rug fit the criteria. If you are looking for an amazing rug, head over to Boutique Rugs and be prepared to be amazed. Their selection is unbelievable and you can use the code “creative55” to save 55% off!!! You can even use that code on clearance rugs!!!! You can’t go wrong with any of their rugs and you will be sure to find exactly what you are looking for. I put together a post with some of my favorite rugs and my Boutique Rugs coupon code so it is easy to find.
At this point, it was time to pick out a new ceiling fan and plug-in sconces for the wall.
I wanted a wood-looking fan. We wanted the room to be warm, neutral and have a cottage vibe and most of the choices we made had that “vibe” in mind.
When I saw the MinkaAire Light Wave fan from Build.com, I knew that was the one.
Matt liked it too. I loved the color of the fan and it has a different look than the other fans I have seen.
The fan comes with a remote which is so convenient when you are lying in bed and don’t want to get up to turn the light or fan off or turn down the speed. We are loving this fan in our bedroom.
When I was picking out the fan, I also browsed the plug-in sconces at Build.com. I saw the Hinkley Lighting Arti Tall Articulating Wall Sconce and my jaw dropped. I had a hard time choosing between the brass and the Olde Bronze. It was a hard decision, but I am so happy we went with the Olde Bronze color for the master bedroom makeover.
It was the right choice. Since we couldn’t put the sconces evenly on either side of our bed because of the placement of the window and the space left around the headboard, I needed to find a sconce that had a long enough arm that could come over the new headboard and give us each enough light to read at night. The Hinkley Lighting Arti Tall Articulating Wall Sconce was the perfect option. I shared how we installed them on my YouTube channel HERE.
The curtain situation in our room needed a makeover as well.
I wanted to find some new curtains and add new curtain rods for them. When I was sharing a shopping trip to Target on my Instagram page, I found these curtain rods. The wood look on them match the wood on our bed almost perfectly. I chose these curtains online after the pandemic hit. They are a creamy white color which goes along with the colors I wanted for the room.
I want wood-toned furniture in the bedroom, so I was able to keep this table on the side of the bed. We don’t have a lot of room in our bedroom, so I was glad to reuse this table. It is the perfect size for what we need. I have a tall stool on the other side of the bed right now. That may stay or I may find something else. We moved the dresser from our living room into the bedroom, but I still need to find another dresser for the other side of the room. That will all come in time and I will update it here when it does.
Along with the new bed, we got a new mattress.
We chose the Alexander Signature Hybrid from Nest Bedding. We chose this bedding because of the options. This mattress has a “comfort layer”. You unzip the top of the mattress to reveal the patented TitanChill Endurance Foam®. This layer is engineered to bring your body optimal support, with our free exchange program during your 100-night trial to move to a different firmness.
Matt and I kept going back and forth about what we wanted in a mattress. This mattress gave us the ease of mind because of the different options it offered. We can change things if we need different support. That just gave us an ease of mind, especially when buying a mattress online. So far, we really like it. It is very comfortable and we haven’t talked about needing to change out the comfort layer. Nest Bedding has many other mattress options. If you are in the market for a new mattress, I would recommend Nest Bedding.
The mattress was sent before we had the bed, but I couldn’t wait to get the mattress out of the box. See how it comes in the mail and how I unboxed it on my YouTube channel HERE.
After we got the bed set up and put the mattress on the frame, we needed to get a 4″ box spring to raise the mattress a little bit. We were floored with the one we bought on Amazon. You can see how easy it was to set up on my YouTube channel HERE.
There are still a few things I need to find to complete the master bedroom makeover, but we have come a long way from sleeping on a mattress on the floor. Every bedroom in our home has been updated over the last year and we are all happy with the results. The kids spend more time in their rooms now (I am not just saying that. They really do). And, when I walk by our room and see our new bed made, with the new rug, the sconces….. it makes me so happy. It is the perfect spot to read a book or magazine and unwind after a long day. I am excited to pick out the rest of the decor and put the finishing touches on it. Maybe after that, we can tackle a bathroom makeover??? We’ll see. We need to get the flip house done first.
