This DIY Tall Dresser Makeover was an easy way to transform an old dresser with a little TLC and paint on the outside and inside the drawers.
This was the last of the three dressers I picked up at the estate sale I talked about HERE.
I am not big on estate sales, but when I can walk away with three pieces that will be easy projects, I am all about it.
This piece had a lot going for it but it also had some issues.
The finish on the top was not in good condition and there was veneer missing in a few areas on the dresser. The veneer is an easy fix depending on what it needs. I had to use two of my techniques on this dresser because the peeling veneer was worse in some areas than others.
Even though it had those issues, the shape and some of the details were still great. It also had all of its original hardware!

I had to give this piece a good cleaning and then it was time to start the TLC and then the painting.
Supplies Used In This Makeover:
“Drop Cloth” Chalk Mineral Paint
“Collard Greens” Chalk Mineral Paint
The first thing I did, even before I cleaned it, was filling some of the peeling veneer with MUD. I talked all about how easy this is to do is this “How To Fix Peeling Veneer” post. I did that on the top drawer and on the sides of the dresser.
The bottom front of the dresser had more missing veneer. It was so much that I decided to use my favorite heat gun and removed that layer of veneer altogether.
After the veneer was gone and the MUD was dry, I gave everything a good sanding with my orbital sander. Then, I gave everything a good cleaning and waited for it to dry before I added paint.
You know I am using my favorite paintbrush to paint anything and choosing a good paint color is one of my favorite parts of these makeovers.
I recently sold a dresser and the person said her sister was looking for a dresser in the same color, so that is the reason I chose “Drop Cloth” for this piece.
You can’t go wrong with this color. No matter what you are painting, this color will look amazing.
Painting the piece made the details stand out more and look how pretty the original hardware looks now!!!
This is a tall beauty that has a new life and is ready for its new home.
I usually don’t paint the inside of drawers, but these drawers were scuffed up some and a coat of paint would make them look so much better.
What paint color looks great with “Drop Cloth” or any color for that matter? “Collard Greens” of course! I love this green color so much and it is just what the drawers needed.
