Vintage rugs add timeless elegance and charm to any home, but maintaining their beauty requires proper care and cleaning. Step 1: Assess the Rug
Before you begin, carefully assess the condition of your vintage rug. Check for any signs of damage, such as fraying edges, holes, or loose threads. If the rug is particularly fragile or valuable, consider consulting a professional rug cleaner who specializes in vintage pieces. If you are buying a vintage rug from a yard sale, thrift store, estate sale, etc. make sure you check it real well for smells, stains, bugs, etc.
Step 2: Gather Supplies
- Vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment. I didn’t use the brush attachment for my rug.
Gentle rug shampoo or mild detergent (I use Dawn dish soap). You could use vinegar too. - Soft-bristle brush or sponge. Depending on your rug, you may not want to use the brush. I found that it worked best for me if I just used my gloved hands to rub the soapy water into the rug. The brush was making the fibers on the rug look tattered and I stopped using it immediately. Test it in a small area first.

Fan or somewhere to hang the rug to dry
Step 3: Vacuum Thoroughly
How to Clean a Vintage Rug begins with the vacuum. Vacuum both sides of the rug to remove loose dirt and debris. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to gently lift dirt from the fibers without damaging them. Be thorough but gentle, as vintage rugs can be delicate. After I vacuumed the rug, I got it all wet with water.
Step 4: Spot Test
Before applying any cleaning solution, perform a spot test on a small, inconspicuous area of the rug to ensure the colors won’t bleed or fade. Mix a small amount of gentle rug shampoo or mild detergent with water and apply it to the test area. Blot with a clean cloth and let it dry completely. If there are no adverse effects, proceed with cleaning. I just put some Dawn dish soap in a big dough bowl and filled it with water.
Step 5: Prepare the Cleaning Solution
Fill a bucket with cool water and add a small amount of gentle rug shampoo or mild detergent. For extra cleaning power, add a splash of white vinegar. Mix the solution until it becomes sudsy. Avoid using hot water, as it can cause colors to bleed and fibers to shrink.
Step 6: Clean the Rug
Dip a soft-bristle brush or sponge into the cleaning solution and gently scrub the rug in a circular motion. BE CAREFUL HERE! THE BRUSH MAY DAMAGE THE RUG. Work in small sections, being careful not to oversaturate the fibers. For stubborn stains, let the solution sit for a few minutes before blotting it away with a clean, white towel.
Step 7: Rinse Thoroughly
After cleaning, rinse the rug thoroughly with cool water to remove any soap residue. You can use a hose or a bucket of clean water to rinse. Make sure to remove all soap, as residue can attract dirt and cause the rug to become stiff. I did this to both sides until the water ran clear.
Step 8: Dry the Rug
Lay the rug flat on a clean surface to dry. Use a fan to speed up the drying process, but avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause colors to fade. Turn the rug occasionally to ensure even drying. Make sure the rug is completely dry before placing it back in its original location to prevent mold and mildew. It was an overcast day when I did this rug. I brought it to a dry part of the concrete to start the drying process. I turned it over multiple times during the drying process so it would dry evenly. When it was not dripping wet any longer, I hung it over our fence to finish drying.
Step 9: Brush and Restore
Once the rug is dry, use a soft-bristle brush to gently restore the fibers to their original state. This will help maintain the rug’s texture and appearance. I didn’t do this to my style rug. I just vacuumed it again and it was perfect!
