I found this dresser at my local Salvation Army store. On this particular day, all of the furniture was half off. I love these days. Our thrift stores don’t do them often. I was glad I happened to stop on this day. Thrift stores need to have sales like this to move merchandise faster! The prices are getting high so things aren’t moving as fast as they used to. You would think they would want to hold these sales on a consistent basis to move things.

Just me?

Okay, I am done with my rant.

Let’s get back to this post on how to transform a dresser with black paint.

This piece was in great condition. I knew it wouldn’t take much to make it even more amazing.

The top drawer was lined with felt. I removed that first. I shared my tutorial on how to do this easily on my YouTube channel HERE

Then, I sanded the inside of that drawer to remove any glue remnants.

Next, I used my favorite salve to revive the wood in that drawer.

Now, it was time to scuff-sand the entire piece. I used my Surfprep sander for this. You can watch me do this step HERE.

{Side note: You can find my full tutorial on the difference between scuff-sanding and regular sanding HERE.}

Once the sanding was done, I cleaned the entire dresser. All it needed was some vinegar and water to clean it

Now, it was time to paint! I used my favorite all-in-one paint, in the color, “Anchor“. This paint has the primer, paint, and topcoat in one can! It makes all your projects easier and faster.

It took two coats of paint to get it covered. I decided to apply Extra Coat to it. You DO NOT need to apply an extra coat at all. The all-in-one paint is designed so you don’t have to. To be honest, I don’t like to use the Extra Coat because it gives the furniture a sheen. I was selling this piece so I wanted to give it some extra protection. If I was keeping it, I wouldn’t have done the Extra Coat.

Once the Extra Coat was dry, I put the hardware back on. When you find a piece that has all the original hardware intact, it is like hitting the jackpot. The hardware made the “Anchor” color that much better.

This piece is now sophisticated, classic, and strong.

Don’t you think? It is a great staple piece that sold in the first hour of listing it. It can be used in so many different spaces and in so many ways. I honestly thought about keeping it but we just don’t have any room. It was going to a good home for someone who was so excited to get it.

I hope this post on how to transform a dresser with black paint inspires your next project!
