Back To School Organization! Make the transition into the hectic school year with some easy organization.
It is time again for a Back To Basics project with some of my blogging friends. This month we are talking about back to school season.
I don’t know about you, but the back to school season makes me want to get the house, my office and our kids organized. If I am not organized, the house doesn’t function efficiently. I need to have all of my ducks in a row so that I can get work done, family stuff done and home stuff done on time.
The back to school organization always starts with cleaning out the closets. I need to know what still fits the kids and what they have grown out of so I know what to buy for school.
They hate it.
I have them try on every single piece of clothing they own because if it doesn’t fit, we need to get rid of it. They are growing like weeds so we filled big garbage bags full of clothes and shoes they no longer can wear. (If you follow me on Instagram, I shared the purging process in my stories. Follow me HERE.)
After the clothes, we move on to school supplies and pack their bags, check it twice and make sure we are all set for the first day.
Then, mom starts tearing through the rest of the house like an organizing machine. Every closet, cabinet and drawer gets emptied and gone through. We will have a HUGE yard sale in the fall with all of the things we aren’t using anymore.
Before we got our flip house, I was telling Matt that I really needed a filing cabinet in my office.
He couldn’t believe it. What do you need one of those for?
After I showed him all the things, he agreed. A filing cabinet would help a lot.
I didn’t want to buy a new one. I wanted to find one that would let me turn it into exactly what I wanted.
That was months ago.
A Restore trip did produce a filing cabinet, but it has sat in our garage ever since because we were working on the flip house.
Not anymore! We closed on the flip house a few weeks ago and now all the projects can get done at our house! YIPPPEEE!
This is what the filing cabinet looked like after I pulled it from the depths of our over-crowded garage.
Why did I pick this thing up?
What was I thinking?
Was I desperate?
Oh, yeah! Now I remember.
It was $5, it was wood and it would give me storage. This little guy is PERFECT!

I needed the filing cabinet to fit on the right side of my desk and hold the printer/copier on top. When I was thinking about what color I wanted to paint it, I decided I wanted it to fade in with the printer. “Coal Black” from Fusion Mineral Paint was the perfect color.
To make my painting projects go quicker, I use one of my favorite paint brushes from Zibra Paint.
Let me tell you something I have learned. When you find a product you love, stick with it. Don’t try to find something else. Why would you? You love that product. It is perfect. It is all you need.
When I first used the brushes from Zibra Paint, I was HOOKED! I painted all the trim in the flip house with the Palm Pro and now I use all of their brushes on all my furniture projects.
After I got two coats of the “Coal Black” on the filing cabinet, I searched in our garage for two pulls. I didn’t care for the handles the filing cabinet came with The brass handles we had in our stash worked much better for my office.
The filing cabinet fits so well next to my desk.
After we got the filing cabinet set up in the office, I started the back to school organization for mom in here.
I rearranged some things, purged many other things and got my calendars all filled in.
Just like the kids, I had to replenish my caddy with new supplies. There is nothing better than new pens, pencils, markers, etc. when I am reorganizing my office.
I am like a kid in a candy store.
I want all the writing things.
The crib springs got some rearranging as well.
I took some things down and added some beautiful artwork my daughter made for my office.
There is nothing better than to see my kids’ creations when I am having a hard time concentrating on work.
Now that the filing cabinet has been here for a few weeks, I don’t know how I lived without one.
Isn’t it crazy how that happens?
I guess you just get smarter and learn how you are going to use a space once you have lived in it for some time.
This office has come a long way. We still need to put new flooring down and figure out the other half of the room a little better.
Then, it should be done……
Until the next school year when I am tackling another back to school organization project.
I love working for home.
Now that I have tackled the back to school organization, nothing will stand in my way once the kids are back in school and I have full days back to devote to this blog that I love.

Love your office makeover and especially the wall sconces. What brand are they and where did you find them? Would love to replace our exterior light fixtures with something similar.
Thank you! We pulled them from a barn, but Amazon has some great options {aff}: http://amzn.to/2vHPwOH
