Blue Table Makeover – Easy DIY

This blue table makeover is a great example of how to get beautiful furniture for your home on the cheap.

About a month ago, Matt and I ventured out to a couple of area yard sales to take a break from the flip house we were working on. We wanted to spend the Saturday morning doing what we love. Armed with coffee and tea, we hit some sales. A lot of people think I find great pieces at every sale I go to, but the fact is that I strike out more than I hit a home run. (It’s baseball season so that seemed fitting 🙂 )

In fact, just the other day, I went to seven yard sales and only bought things at one sale. When Matt and I were out that morning, we went to nine sales and I didn’t find a thing until we stopped at the last sale before heading home.

I also found this table.

Isn’t it pretty? Well, maybe “pretty” isn’t the right word.

It wasn’t pretty when I got it, but I saw all the details it had and all the potential it had. 

If there is one thing I hope you get inspired by when I share makeovers like this is that if you look past the ugly and current state of a piece and see the overall design, detail and what it can be, you can decorate your home exactly how you want it without breaking your budget to do so.

Some people have an unlimited budget when it comes to decorating their homes, but a lot more of us don’t. Or, we just don’t want to pay a lot of money for decor and furniture. Being creative and seeing past the current state of a lot of pieces is how we have never gone in debt to get the cozy and comfortable look and feel we want for our home.

Dixie Belle Paint

Zibra Paint Brush – Palm Pro

A damp rag to clean the table

I used the Palm Pro from Zibra Paint for this project.

The small handle fits in my hand perfectly and it is my favorite brush to get into awkward spaces when I am painting. Once I started using Zibra brushes, I have never looked back. They are the only paint brush I have used that has never had a bristle fall off while I am painting. A lot of brushes do that after I have used them and washed them a few times.

There is nothing more frustrating than being in the middle of a project and having to pick up pieces of the brush in the paint and messing it all up. Zibra makes many different shaped brushes that fit every job a DIYer would do. They have really thought about the needs of people using paint brushes. It is hard to pick a favorite. Each brush is my favorite because I use them all for different projects. Do yourself a favor and invest in some good brushes that you will never get frustrated with. Find them all HERE. 

To prepare this table for paint, all I did was clean it. I love using Dixie Belle Paint because you don’t have to do a lot of prep work. This table had seen better days and the wood was pretty dry so I didn’t need to sand it or remove a finish at all.

I had a couple of Dixie Belle Paint colors that only had a little bit left in each jar. I mixed them all together and got this pretty blue color for this table. Creating custom colors (because I am stingy about wasting paint) is one of my favorite things to do. I will hold on to a small amount of paint because I can always mix colors to get more paint or I can use it on smaller projects I am working on.

Again, just with some paint, the details on this table popped. There is something about putting paint on a piece that has so much detail that makes those details look that much better. 

Sadly, we don’t have room for this little gem so I will have to sell it, but I always get excited for the person who will find a great spot for it in their home. I will always pick up furniture that has potential. If we don’t have room for it, I love using it as a teaching tool for tutorials. All the pieces we work on always find a great home if they don’t work in ours. Not having the space will never stop us from hunting and rescuing beautiful pieces to make over and share.

I think I have a thing for tables like this because as I was writing this post, I remembered that I did a table similar to this blue table a while back. I looked back through the blog and found it! It is the exact table. HAHA! I painted it a pretty gray color then. Find it HERE.
