Budget-Friendly Bathroom Makeover In Flip House

4 Mins read

This budget-friendly bathroom makeover made the biggest difference in the flip house.

I am writing this post after we have accepted an offer on this flip house! We were driving back from vacation when I received the offer. We signed it the next day. To say that was the best way to end our vacation, is an understatement. We advertised the house for sale for about a week and a half when we got the offer. (insert clapping hands).

Today, I want to talk about the main bathroom in this flip house.

It was a doozy when we bought the house. I knew we were going to have to spend a little money in here to make it what it needed to be and I planned for that in the overall budget. We accomplished that and this budget-friendly bathroom makeover turned out so good!

Let’s start with a quick reminder of what we were working with when we started the bathroom.

I feel like there were a couple different makeovers in this bathroom throughout the years and with each one, they just decided to stop halfway through it.

There were two different tile choices on the floor. The vanity was huge and had to be custom-made to fit the space, and the overall feeling of the bathroom was depressing and dark.

The plastic tiles on the walls were coming off or were already off in spots.

I couldn’t wait to get started on removing the tile in this bathroom because I could tell it was going to be an easy job.

It was one of my favorite “demo” jobs of this flip house. Any time I can rip of tiles from a wall or floor easily, it is my favorite thing to do. It is so satisfying. That may sound weird, but my mom is the same way. It is like removing wallpaper that is coming off in big pieces. #sosatisfying

I have helped my mom try to get tile off the floor in her home when my parents bought it and it was a nightmare. It was glued on so we had to sit on the floor with heat guns and work very slowly to get them all up. It was a nightmare! I know how bad it can be so when an easy tile job like this is presented to me, I am extremely grateful and extremely excited to get started.

I know it doesn’t look like it, but once I had all the tile gone from the floor and the walls, I felt like the bathroom looked better already. Once we removed the vanity, I felt like the bathroom could breathe again.

Now that the tile and vanity were removed, we had a better picture of what we needed to do in this bathroom.

We also were at the point to decide what to do with the shower area. I didn’t mind the black tile and the tile board they put in there, but whoever did it, used so much grout that it covered the black tiles and we couldn’t get it off. There was also a stain at the bottom of the tile board that I couldn’t get out.

In the end, we decided to rip it all out.

With a blank slate in the bathroom, it was time to start planning the makeover. When I was picking out the kitchen flooring for the flip house, I was so amazed by the line of flooring, that I chose the bathroom flooring from the same company. The flooring was the start point of this entire makeover. It gave me the direction for the entire room.

And look at it in the bathroom! It made such a huge difference.

It is such a happy pattern and it really brightened the space.

Once the floor was put in, were we able to finish the rest of the bathroom. We added wanescotting to the walls and painted it a bright white. Matt added a trim ledge to the top. This would be a fun spot to decorate with small pictures I thought. We painted the bathroom the same color paint as the dining room because I loved the color and we had plenty of it left over for the bathroom. (Related: How to Paint a Bathtub)

We added a new toilet, vanity and faucet and found an inexpensive mirror at Walmart.

We thought we were going to struggle to find a light fixture that would work, but we struck gold when we stopped in at Restore and found this fixture! I couldn’t believe it. It was the perfect size. If you just have patience and keep going, you would be amazed what you can find at your local Restore. The best part was that it was $2! It was chrome and didn’t have shades on it. Not to worry, a little black spray paint and 25¢ shades from Restore fixed that. For under $5, we had a light fixture that looked great and fit perfectly.

We added a surround to the tub, added new fixtures in the shower and had to update some plumbing and electrical and then we were done. We spent less than $1500 (we had to hire out for the flooring, plumbing and electrical because we can’t DIY those) to get this bathroom looking and functioning right. That may seem like a lot, but this is the main bathroom of the house so I knew we would spend more than we did on the bathroom in the basement. To see how we did that bathroom for $216, head HERE

This budget-friendly bathroom makeover is so pretty now and it didn’t blow our overall budget at all.

We stayed within the budget we set up for the project and even came in under budget in the end. I shopped for things on sale, scored a great deal at Restore and waited for stores to have sales to purchase the things we needed. A lot of people think they need thousands of dollars to make over a room in their house. I am here to say it can be done for a lot less and still look amazing. I am happy with the amount of money we spent and the outcome we got.
