DIY Desk Makeover

2 Mins read

This is the story of the ugly duckling desk. When I saw this at a yard sale from a distance, I noticed the legs and the drawer. Those were two great features it had going for it. It wasn’t until I got closer to it and realized this piece was going to need a major DIY desk makeover to make it pretty again.

Do you have an old desk that you don't love anymore? This DIY desk makeover shows you how to take a not-so-pretty desk and make it into something beautiful and functional for your space.

Supplies Used For This DIY Desk Makeover:

Bronze Color – Rustoleum Spray Paint

Orbital Sander

“Cobblestone” Paint from Country Chic Paint

The markings and stickers on the top didn’t scare me. It still had all of its great features that caught my eye from the road.

As I started inspecting the desk further, I noticed that the stickers someone loved so much weren’t only on the top, but all around the sides and the back of the desk as well. Gotta love a good sticker collection!

The stickers didn’t even scare me away from this desk.

Why?

Because I knew the desk had loads of potential and could look like this:

To make over this desk, the first thing I did was wash it. I was so surprised that the stickers came off relatively easy.

Then, I sanded the heck out of the dresser.

(Thanks to Matt for giving me a sanding model for this picture.)  ðŸ™‚

The sanding took off all the writings on the desk. It also prepared it for a couple of coats of “Cobblestone” paint from Country Chic Paint.

This desk is beautiful now!

I used Rustoleum Bronze colored spray paint for the hardware.

Amazing color combination.

I have been excited to write this post. An ugly piece of furniture, with good bones and great features, can become a beautiful piece of furniture again. Whenever I am shopping at yard sales, I always stick to the six things I look for when choosing furniture to make over. With those 6 things in mind, heading to a yard sale is so much fun because the possibilities are endless! I ALWAYS look past the “ugly” of a piece and instantly start thinking about the potential it has. This desk is a perfect example of that.

I would love to hear about the great pieces you have rescued from yard sales recently.
