Step-by-Step Guide For This DIY Dog Bed

NOTE: I have added my full video of this process at the end of this post. Watch that video to see each step done in real time.

Step 1: Choose the Right Antique Bed

The first step is finding an antique bed frame. You can usually find these at thrift stores, antique shops, yard sales, or estate sales. Look for a frame that fits the size of your dog. Small breeds can fit comfortably in a twin bed frame, while larger dogs might need a full-sized frame.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Bed Frame

Depending on the size of your dog, you may need to cut down the bed frame to a more appropriate size. Measure your dog to ensure they have enough room to stretch out comfortably. Use a saw to modify the bed frame to the right length. For our project, we made it a three-sided bed. We cut one end of the bed in half to make the two sides. We also cut the legs down so it was closer to the floor.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

With the sides cut, it was time to assemble the DIY Dog Bed. We used wood screws and a drill to securely attach the cut ends to the headboard. Then, we used the pocket hole maker to create the holes to attach the front piece to the bed.  Then, it was time to create the base. We used some scrap wood (cut to size) and attached it around the inside of the base of the bed frame we put together. Then, we cut a piece of thin plywood down to size to fit on the braces.

Step 4: Sand and Paint the Frame

Next, it was time to sand and paint. We gave everything a scuff-sand and painted it all with black spray paint.

Step 5: Add the Cushion

Now, it’s time to add comfort! You can either buy a dog bed cushion that fits the dimensions of your frame or make a custom cushion by cutting foam to size and covering it with fabric. I used a dog bed we weren’t using anymore and cut it down to size. Then, I added a Geometry House towel that would be easy to remove and clean.
