With the holidays around us and everyone entertaining and celebrating a little more, I thought this DIY Wooden Tray would be a great post to share with you today.
A wooden tray is so versatile. I love them and use them for so many different things.
This particular tray project began with this drawer I picked up at a yard sale.
It was the perfect depth for a tray and I liked how big it was.
When I got it home and started working on it, it looked like someone had taken the finish off the drawer. That was perfect because when I added dark stain to it, it made it look like weathered, barn wood! {Insert the happy dance here}.
Look at that color.
Perfection.

To make it a “tray”, I added drawer handles to both ends of the drawer.
Now, it is time to add a little fun with the Chevron Patterns Stencil Mask.
I did not want the pattern to be perfect and I wanted it to look worn so I added a few of the stencils to the tray without measuring.
I dry brushed white paint over the stencils.
After I removed the stencils, I sanded the pattern to make it more faded.
I love how it turned out!
This wooden tray will get tons of use.
I will use it for movie nights and fill it with popcorn bags and sodas.
It’s perfect by our fire pit for smores.
I will also use it as a centerpiece on our table – filled with flowers, twigs and other natural things.
And, I will use it to serve food and drinks in when we entertain.
Now, on to a few glamour shots! 😉
I hope you enjoyed this easy, repurposed wooden tray project. Find an empty drawer and make your own this weekend! 😉
Do you love trays as much as I do? What do you use them for?
If you don’t have time to make your own wooden tray, I found some beautiful options online:

Love the patina on your drawer tray and the worn chevron is perfect. I have to ask Lindsay, did those pretty flowers come out of your garden? If so, I’m very jealous as we have had a snowfall already.
Thanks Marie. I wish those flowers were happening right now in our yard. I took the pictures this summer. 🙂
This is perfect! Pinned and tweeted. We appreciate you taking the time to party with us! I hope to see you on Monday at 7 pm, so we get to see your fabulous new creations. The party goes until Friday at 7 pm. Happy Sunday! Lou Lou Girls
Thanks ladies!
You have added stencils to this project. But I have crate which used to have dynamite in it years ago. It has the lettering on the side. Do you have any suggestions as to how to refinish it without erasing the lettering? It needs cleaning but sanding it would erase the lettering. Thanks for any advice you have.
Coby,
With something like that, I would just clean it as good as you can and then I would put a top coat over it to preserve it. Dixie Belle has a great top coat. You can find it here {aff}: https://bit.ly/2P4pNZG
I love old wood boxes with markings on it. I would never sand over them and this is how I have preserved mine. I hope that helps!
