This blue dresser makeover has made me love the color blue all over again.
I am so excited about this makeover. I am usually a neutral color person (unless green is involved), but after this makeover, I might be adding more color to the makeovers I do. This blue dresser could not have turned out any prettier and it was so easy to do.
First, let me tell you about how I found the dresser.
If you read my post HERE about where I find furniture to flip, then you know how I feel about shopping estate sales. I have to be honest that I was the most surprised to have found this dresser and a truck load of stuff at an estate sale!!! Yard sales are non-existent in Iowa during the winter and I haven’t had much luck finding great pieces at the thrift store around here, so I thought I would stop at an estate sale.
It was the first day of the estate sale and Matt and I were in the neighborhood, so we stopped in. There were so many great pieces I found, but there was no way I was paying full price for them. Most of the things I liked needed a lot of work to fix them and they were in great need of a makeover. There was no way I could pay what they marked them. So, I saw the sign that said everything would be 75% off on the last day of the sale. I told Matt that I wanted to come back on that day and be one of the first people in the door.
We were at the house early on the last day equipped with a plan for who was going where to make sure we got what we wanted. The divide and conquer mission was underway.
The doors opened and I went to the garage and Matt headed to the cellar basement. We got what we came for and so much more. It was so much fun!!! Estate sales are not my favorite, but if you follow the tips I share in the post HERE, you can sometimes come away with some great pieces for little money. This estate sale was unique for me. I have never gotten that much at such a discount before. It made me think about estate sales a little differently.

This particular dresser was missing some of the back and part of the shelf inside. We had all the pieces for the back, so Matt just had to put them back on. He also added a board to the shelf in the bottom of the dresser. Easy fixes that brought this dresser back to a full piece. We found this piece in the cellar basement so it was DIRTY! It needed to be cleaned well before I could start any makeover.
Supplies Used In This Blue Dresser Makeover:
Yankee Blue Paint
Zibra Paint Brush
Dark Glaze
Old Rag
Once the dresser was cleaned and dry, it was time for paint.
I get asked all the time if I prep the pieces I paint. That all depends on the piece. The wood on this one was so dry so I knew it would take the paint well. If a piece is shiny or has a really smooth top coat, I will use BOSS from Dixie Belle Paint as a primer first.
I decided on Yankee Blue from Dixie Belle Paint Company for the color. I used the square brush from Zibra Paint to put it on. The square brush fits in my hand so well and the way the brush is angled makes me feel like I have more control when I paint. There were a lot of details that I needed to paint and this brush handled them well.
I usually grab the round brush for more detailed pieces, but the square brush tackled it like a champ.
The Zibra brushes are interchangeable. You won’t go wrong with any of their brushes. I would suggest you get a couple of them depending on what you paint. Trust me, they have the brush you need for any painting job you do and you will never look back once you use them. Quality brushes that make your painting work easier are worth every penny in my book.
I have to be totally transparent and say when I first applied the Yankee Blue color, I was scared. It had a purple undertone. That was not the direction I was going in at all. I decided not to freak out and go with it. I painted the entire dresser and as it started drying, it looked much better – less purple and bluer. When it was all dry, I still wanted to deepen the color a little more. Whenever that happens, I reach for a dark wax or glaze.
Side note: I share all of my projects in my Instagram stories while I am doing them. I walk through the steps and share tips and ideas behind each project. If you are not following me there, head HERE to see the next project live.
To deepen the blue color on this piece, I used a dark glaze. I had it on hand, it is easy to use and I thought it would add the right amount of darkness I needed to achieve the color I was looking for.
It was!
To put the glaze on the dresser, I used a paint brush. Then, I rubbed it on and wiped it off with an old rag. The glaze is easy to manipulate and very forgivable. You can rub it off where you think it is too much and add more if you think a spot needs more. A lot of people get scared to use glazes and waxes, but they really are easy if you work in small areas at a time. They also give you a good arm workout with all the rubbing. 🙂
I was blown away by what the glaze did to the paint color. It made it a richer blue and really gave this piece some extra character and charm.
I was so happy all of the original hardware was still on the piece. The aged brass would have been hard to replicate. It is beautiful against the blue color.
I brought the blue dresser into my office for the photos. I liked the personality it added to my office. Sadly, this one will be sold as we have no room for it, but it was fun to have it in my work world while it lasted.
I am already thinking of the next colorful project I can do.
What was the last color you used on a piece of furniture, on the walls in your home or in your decor?

Beautiful results. I love the aged patina of the paint job you did. It’s subtle and yet gives that pop of color. I’m usually a big fan of not painting good wood finishes, but this one could change my mind! Great job!
Thank you! I loved the outcome too!
I really like this piece and the paint color. And you didn’t sand OR prime, you just painted the dresser after cleaning it? I’m asking because the original finish looked glossy.
That is why I love Dixie Belle Paint! I just cleaned it.
hi,
Can you send me the link to the glaze? It says it isn’t found with the URL.
I’m IN LOVE with how beaufitul this came out!
