I want to thank Zibra Paint for partnering with me on this DIY Neutral Dresser Makeover. All opinions of my favorite paint brushes are my own.
If you saw my vintage blue dresser makeover earlier this week, you know that I recently stopped at a “kind of an estate sale” and bought three dressers. That post also told you how I feel about estate sales and why I was shocked to be buying not one, but three dressers from one estate sale!!
This piece was beautiful.
Find The Potential In Old Furniture Pieces
It has some wear and it was missing a knob, but the drawers worked so well and the drawer fronts were in very good condition. When I find a piece that has some good condition wood mixed with some “not so good” areas, I try to keep the integrity of the good parts and makeover the “not so good”.
There was a pretty good-sized stain on the top of the dresser. It wasn’t a water stain and it wasn’t raised like something was spilled on it. It almost looked like it could have been a bleach stain. Who knows. I just knew that this guy could be made over and sold to someone who would have it for years to come.

Supplies Used In This DIY Neutral Dresser Makeover:
“Sand Bar” Chalk Mineral Paint
I am quickly falling more in love with warm colors. I have always been drawn to them, but recently, I am really pushing for them in our home and pieces I work on. “Sand Bar” is a beautiful paint color. It is on the taupe side, but more creamy and lighter. IT IS GORGEOUS!
To start this makeover, I removed all the knobs (I am keeping these knobs because I can use them on another piece).
TIP: ALWAYS KEEP HARDWARE! YOU WILL SAVE SO MUCH MONEY ON OTHER PROJECTS THAT YOU CAN REPURPOSE THEM ON!
Next, I removed all the drawers.
Then, I cleaned the dresser inside and out. I used vinegar and water and an old rag. I made sure to run a dry rag over it so it wasn’t sitting wet for long.
After that, I opened a new can of paint and got to work.
ANOTHER TIP: THERE IS SO MUCH PAINT ON THE INSIDE OF THE LID AFTER YOU SHAKE A NEW CAN OF PAINT. USE IT!! I HAVE DONE MANY SMALL PIECES AND FULL DRAWERS WITH ONLY THE PAINT ON THE LID. DON’T WASTE IT. USE IT FIRST.
You know that I am using my favorite paintbrushes from Zibra Paint on all my painting projects. I am falling in love with the 2″ angled brush from Zibra Paint. It is so good at getting into the nooks and crannies on furniture pieces and it is great for trimming walls and trim. If you are looking for the best paintbrush, you need to get some of these projects into your hands. You are going to love them so much!
The Mix Of Wood Tones and Paint Colors Updates Old Furniture
The outer shell of the dresser only took two coats of paint. I didn’t use any primer at all. The Dixie Belle Paint is made for that. You don’t have to do a lot of prepping before you paint. It is a dream when working on furniture projects like this.
As the paint was drying, I used Restor-A-Finish on the front of the drawers.
This stuff is amazing.
I used the “Dark Walnut” color. It made them look new!
The Restor-A-Finish is one of those products that we always have on hand now. We have used it on all kinds of wood projects and it works amazingly every time. I highly recommend having the two colors on hand for different projects. I apply it with an old rag and watch as it restores wood back to its original glory.
The drawer fronts on this dresser weren’t bad at all, but the Restor-A-Finish made them that much better. It cleaned up the wood and enriched it to make it look new.
This stuff is unbelievable. If you do any kind of wood projects, make sure to add it to your arsenal of supplies.
I added some hardware that I found at Restore.
This DIY Neutral Dresser Makeover was one of the easier ones I have worked on lately.
It was a welcomed project. 🙂
What color would you have painted the outer shell?
