Create stylish Halloween decor with DIY Pottery Barn Jack-O-Lantern dupe. Get the high-end look for less than $5 using plastic pails, paint, and LED candles.
When I first saw Pottery Barn’s metal jack-o-lantern candle holders, I instantly fell in love with their rustic charm and cozy glow. However, the price tag was less than appealing. So, I decided to create my version for a fraction of the cost by using plastic jack-o-lantern pails, spray paint, and some of my favorite metallic paints! This simple DIY project gives you that high-end look for less than $5 per jack-o-lantern! Let’s dive in!

Materials You’ll Need:
- Plastic Jack-O-Lantern Pails (I got two different sizes)
- All-in-One Paint (You can use spray paint too but make sure it is made for plastic)
- Bonding BOSS
- Battery-Operated LED Candles
- Metallic Copper Paint
- Precision Knife
- Paintbrushes
Step-by-Step Instructions for this DIY Pottery Barn Jack-O-Lantern Dupe:
1. Prep Your Pails
Start by removing any handles or stickers from the plastic jack-o-lantern pails. Wipe down the pail to remove any dust or debris.
2. Paint
I tried using regular spray paint and it didn’t cover the plastic well. I didn’t want to go and get more spray paint when I had my favorite all-in-one paint on hand. I used that and it worked well. Allow it to dry completely before adding a second coat if necessary.
3. Apply Bonding BOSS
Now, it is time to prepare the inside of the jack-o-lantern. Apply an even coat of the Bonding BOSS to help the metallic paint adhere so much better. Make sure it is fully dry before applying the metallic paints.
4. Paint Inside Metallic
To mimic the high-end look of the Pottery Barn version, I applied a few coats of metallic paints (you can do any color metallic you like. I chose copper and gold) inside the jack-o-lanterns.
4. Carve Face
Once all of the paint is dry, it is time to carve the pumpkin. Use a precision knife to cut out the indented areas of the eyes, nose, and mouth to expose the metallic color inside. Be careful and hold your razor firm. You will have to clean up the edges and touch up the paint after carving.
5. Insert LED Candles
Place a battery-operated LED candle inside the pail. The LED candle will provide a safe, warm glow without the risk of melting the plastic or causing a fire hazard.
5. Display and Enjoy!
Your Pottery Barn-inspired DIY metal jack-o-lantern dupe is ready to be displayed! For a festive touch, place it on your porch, mantel, or as part of your Halloween centerpiece.
Project Notes:
- You could use metallic spray paint inside instead of the paint I used. I had this paint on hand so wanted to use that.
- You may find it best to paint the inside first and then the outside.
- If spray painting, you may want to apply a primer first to make sure the paint adheres well.
This DIY project is a fantastic way to get that high-end Pottery Barn look without breaking the bank.
For less than $5, you can create a stylish and spooky candle holder that will add a touch of warmth and elegance to your Halloween décor. Plus, it’s a fun and easy project that anyone can do!
