Over the past year or so, my husband and I have been focused on investing in our health and well-being, and one of the best decisions we’ve made recently is adding an indoor sauna to our home. We’ve been loving the new ways it enhances our self-care routine and brings a little bit of spa luxury into our daily lives. I’ve also been exploring other ways to prioritize self-care and create a peaceful, rejuvenating environment at home. As a big fan of DIY projects, I couldn’t resist trying my hand at a fun and simple project: a DIY rock mat.
Self-care is so important, and for me, it’s all about creating a space that helps me unwind and relax. A DIY rock mat can become a great addition to your home, adding a calming, therapeutic touch to any wellness routine. It’s an easy, affordable way to enhance the spa-like experience right at home. In this post, I’ll show you how to create your own DIY rock mat to elevate your space and support your at-home self-care practice.

Supplies Used To Create This DIY Rock Mat
Smooth Porous Rocks (see notes below)
Rubber Mat (I used an 18×30 but you could do any size)
Important Tips for Choosing Rocks
The rocks you use are key to this project. Make sure they are:
- Smooth and porous (avoid polished rocks, as silicone adheres better to porous surfaces).
- Flat to create an even surface on the mat.
You can buy bags of rocks at craft or home improvement stores, but for a personal touch, consider gathering rocks from places that hold special meaning to you. Incorporating rocks from a favorite vacation spot, for instance, makes the mat even more unique and memorable.
Step-by-Step Guide to Create Your DIY Rock Mat
1. Clean the Rocks
Start by thoroughly washing your rocks to remove any dirt or debris. Let them dry completely before adhering them to the mat.
2. Prepare the Mat
While your rocks dry, prepare your rubber mat. Ideally, use a mat with drainage holes. If you can’t find one, you can create your own by drilling 1/2-inch holes throughout the mat. Make sure the mat has a flat side for better adhesion.
3. Arrange the Rocks
Lay your rocks out on the mat to plan the arrangement. This is like solving a puzzle—mix and match large and small rocks until the entire mat is covered. This step is essential to ensure the best fit before you start gluing.
4. Adhere the Rocks
Once you’re happy with your arrangement, apply a small amount of clear waterproof silicone to the back of each rock. Press it firmly into place on the mat. Avoid using too much silicone to keep the mat clean and professional-looking.
5. Let the Mat Set
Allow the silicone to fully cure by leaving the mat untouched overnight. Even if the silicone label says it sets quickly, giving it extra time ensures a strong bond.
6. Enjoy Your Rock Mat
Your rock mat is now ready to use! Place it wherever you want to add a spa-like touch—whether it’s outside your shower, bathtub, or even on your patio for an outdoor retreat.
The Benefits of Using a DIY Rock Mat
There’s something uniquely calming about standing on smooth rocks. It’s as if you’re transported to a spa or serene outdoor setting. This simple project allows you to bring that tranquil feeling into your daily life without ever leaving home.
With just a few materials and a little creativity, you can easily recreate the relaxing vibe of a luxury spa in your own space. So why not treat yourself and make your own DIY rock mat today?
