This DIY Sentimental Ornament is a great way to create a memento out of something that reminds you of a loved one who has passed.
Last year, a friend of mine lost her dad. When I was looking for a project idea online, something came up that made me think of the embroidery hoop ornaments I made a few years ago. I got an idea for my friend. I reached out to her and she wanted to give one to each of her siblings and her mom.
This post is all about that project.
Let’s get to work.

Supplies Used In This DIY Sentimental Ornament
Clothing (see the notes below)
4″ Embroidery Hoops (you could use any size)
Embellishments (small pine cones, greenery, holly leaves, etc.)
Clothing pieces to use in this project:
- Button Down Shirts
- Jeans
- Handkerchief
- Aprons
- Jersey
- Uniform
- Work Clothes
- Ties
- You could make almost anything work
Side Note: I didn’t take photos as I worked on these so I am putting this post together after they were done and with what I had left after.
Steps to create this sentimental gift:
- The first thing I did was stain the embroidery hoops. You don’t have to do this. You could also paint them.
- When the stain was dry, I opened the embroidery hoop and put it on the part of the shirt that I wanted inside the embroidery hoop. I thought the buttons were great because they would know this was their dad’s button-down shirt he wore all the time. You could do any part of the shirt or piece of clothing you are using (like the photo below).
- Once I had the hoop where I wanted it, I tightened it with the screw on top and then cut the shirt around the hoop.
- Once I had it all cut around the hoop, I flipped the hoop over and trimmed off all the excess shirt. (I used the finished piece in the photos below to illustrate each step).
- Once the excess was all cut off, it was time to cut the felt to fit the back. I traced the embroidery hoop on the felt. Then, cut it out.
- Once the felt was cut out, I hot glued it to the back of the embroidery hoop.
- Now that the shirt was in and the back was put on, it was time to embellish. You could use whatever you like.
- I didn’t want to take away from the shirt so I kept the embellishments simple. I added a small white ribbon, a leaf, a tiny pinecone, etc.
The pocket ornament is my favorite! You could add so many things inside the pocket; a hand-written note, a hand-written recipe if you are using an apron, a patch from a work uniform, etc.
This is an easy project that can be customized in so many ways. You could use bigger embroidery hoops and hang them on a wall or use the smaller ones as we did, add an ornament hook, and hang them on the Christmas tree.
I did share a video of this project on my YouTube channel HERE.
