This DIY Upcycled Gather Sign was easy to make with a few supplies and upcycled items.
I can’t believe that this is going to be my last project of 2018! Looking back on the blog over the last year, I am amazed at how many great projects we have done. It is hard to pick a favorite. I have rescued so many things that I was able to turn into functional and pretty things, we have flipped homes and breathed life into so many furniture pieces.
With all the projects we do each year, there is still a soft spot for upcycled projects in our hearts. Upcycling has been our jam for so long and it is the way we have decorated our home on the cheap over the past eighteen years.
This DIY Upcycled Gather Sign was the last project of the year and I couldn’t love it more. I love it because it is such an easy project and upcycling wood screens into signs and other wall decor is a great way to get a piece “framed” without a high price tag.

Supplies Used In This DIY Upcycled Gather Sign:
Old Wood Framed Screen
Scrap Wood
Zibra Paint Brushes
Paint
Chalk Couture Transfers
Nail Gun
This project started with wood-framed screens we picked up at our local Restore. They were 50¢ each and the perfect size for homemade signs!!! The best part was that all the work for the frame was already done for us!
All we had to do was remove the trim and the screen.
Then, Matt measured the back of the frame and cut scrap wood to fit inside. He cut beadboard for two of the frames and cut thin plywood for the other two.
He secured the beadboard wood with a nail gun. Then, he stained the beadboard.
For the frames with the thin plywood, I painted the frames and the plywood before he put them together.
I painted the wood frame in white and the thin plywood in green. The beadboard wood and frame project is shared at the end of this post.
I sing the praises of my Zibra paint brushes all the time. Zibra has made different brushes that are all amazing for DIY projects. There are smaller brushes and brushes angled in different ways to make all your painting projects so much easier. I use these brushes on all of my projects – even our flip house projects. To be totally honest, I had searched and searched for paintbrushes that fit the needs of furniture painters and other DIY projects and couldn’t find anything I loved. Then, I was introduced to Zibra and have never looked back. Matt loves to use them so much too!
After the paint dried, I used the “Gather” transfer from Chalk Couture to create the sign. Chalk Couture makes sign-making SO EASY!!! I had two signs made in under 30 minutes from start to finish. You can’t beat that!!!
Here is a video of how easy it was to put the word on the plywood.
Having the wood screen frames adds character, but it also takes all the work out of making your own frames. It is always a good idea to create new pieces from cast-away pieces. The other frame is pictured below. I added brass hooks to the stained beadboard. It was the perfect spot for Santa mugs!
I set our Christmas table with the Gather sign as the centerpiece. The thick wood frame would make it a great candidate for a tray too. All you need to do is add some handles like I did on the DIY Christmas serving tray HERE.
This gather sign made a great statement on the table and it will be a cute addition for the Christmas season hung on the wall.
If you are a DIYer and are looking for paintbrushes that fit the needs of the jobs you are doing, I can’t recommend Zibra paint brushes enough. They would make a great gift for the DIYer on your list too! Great paint brushes can make the biggest difference in your projects.
