Milk Paint: Dresser Makeover With Milk Paint

3 Mins read

I have a dresser makeover with milk paint to share with you today. After we had our spring yard sale, I was hoping that more sales would pop up around our area. They did. I was so excited to clear out the things we weren’t using or didn’t love anymore. But, I was eager to get out and hunt for new treasures. The season started out great and I found this little dresser at the first sale.

Dressers are always great to rescue because you can use them for so many different things. This particular dresser was small and had great storage. BUT…… that wasn’t what stood out to me at first.

Can you tell what stood out to me first?

If you guessed that it was stripped down to the bare wood, then you win!

Any time I can rescue a piece that someone has already done the prep work for, I get excited. Who doesn’t like a little help every now and then?

I was happy to rescue the dresser and finish the job they had started.

I am a sucker for paint and love trying new paints I discover. Old Barn Milk Paint has so many beautiful colors. I love the name of the company and I really wanted to try milk paint on this piece. A dresser makeover with milk paint was what the doctor ordered and I was excited to try a new color and product.

Can we just talk about the packaging for a minute? Isn’t it so cute?! It is funny how the way something is packaged can make you appreciate it that much more. The little bag with the stamped logo sold me.

The paint comes in a powder and you mix it with water. They sent a little plastic container and whisk for the mixing. Too cute!

I wanted to see if I could stain the top of the dresser and paint the rest of it. I like the look of wood and paint together (similar to what I did with this piece) and thought this dresser would be a great candidate for it.

As you can see from the photo below, it wasn’t. The top did not want to take the stain at all.

No worries. I forged on with painting the entire dresser. I chose “Silo” for the dresser. It is a little more silvery/gray than I thought, but it made the dresser so cute again.

Of course, I wanted to rough it up a bit so I used sandpaper all over it. Milk paint is fun to sand down. It flakes and comes off where it wants to. I love that about it. It doesn’t take a lot of work and you don’t want to force it. Just watch the magic happen where it wants to and see what you come up with.

Once I added the 1-1/4 IN. COTTAGE CABINET KNOB from Hickory Hardware, I really thought this dresser had the sweetest, cottage vibe.

The size of this dresser is perfect for a cottage. The color is soft and neutral and it would fit and function in so many little spaces. I seem to fall in love with smaller pieces more than bigger ones because we have small rooms in our home. It is hard to find little pieces that work, but when you do, it is so satisfying.
