This Easy Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie recipe comes from our favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. We wanted to see if it would work inside a cast iron skillet as a giant cookie.
SPOILER ALERT! IT DOES!
Matt is a huge chocolate chip cookie fan. Okay, let’s be honest, he is a chocolate chip cookie dough fan, but the baked cookies are his next favorite dessert. Gabrielle is always up for baking and she was thinking about baking some cookies the other day and I told her we should try making our favorite chocolate chip cookies into a large skillet cookie. She was happy to try it.

We followed this Easy Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe for the dough. We sprayed our 12″ cast iron skillet with a little cooking spray and put the dough inside. A rubber spatula spread it out evenly.
Can we take a minute and talk about cooking with cast iron? I love cooking in the cast iron skillet. I know there are many great reasons to cook in cast iron. Here are just a few of my favorites from Chopra.com.
-
Cast iron cookware are inexpensive, non-stick, hold a high heat capacity, free of chemicals, add trace amounts of iron to your food, and last—well—forever.
-
The versatility and durability of cast iron cookware make them well-crafted kitchen commodities that get better with age.
-
Nutritionally speaking, cooking with cast iron can increase iron content in food—especially acidic food like tomato sauce.
-
A study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that the iron content in 100 grams of spaghetti sauce jumped from 0.6 mg to 5.7 mg after being cooked in a cast iron pot.
-
With cast iron, you also avoid exposure to nasty chemicals in typical non-stick pans, which emit toxic fumes when overheated and contain perfluorocarbons (PFC).
-
Cast iron also retains heat so efficiently and has such a high heat capacity that you use less fuel when you cook with it.
After we had the dough mixed, we set the oven to 350º and baked the chocolate chip skillet cookie for about 27 minutes. I would say anywhere from 25-28 minutes. All ovens are different. I checked it by inserting a toothpick and when it came out clean, we pulled the skillet out. When we cut into it, it looked a little under done. THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT! The cast iron stays so hot, so it is like it continues to cook when you pull it out of the oven. Once the cookie cooled completely, the inside looked completely done.
Matt added ice cream to the top of his and the kids tried whip cream on theirs. Everyone agreed it was amazing on its own, but it you wanted to add something else, it would be good too. The “official” vote on this Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie was when Matt came into the kitchen after eating his first slice and said, “This might even be better than having the cookies”.
I loved that he said that because making the skillet cookie is so much easier! When you are in the mood for chocolate chip cookies, but don’t want to go through all of the hassles of spooning each cookie, spread the dough in a cast iron skillet and have a Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie in no time!

- In a bowl, we mixed all of the dry ingredients together (flour, baking soda and salt).

- Once the dough was mixed, add the chocolate chips and mix until well incorporated.
- Pour batter into a cast iron skillet. Bake for 25-28 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
When a toothpick comes out clean, pull the skillet out. When you cut into it, it will look a little underdone. This is what you want!
