It’s finally time to talk fall home decor! This time of year always makes me excited to change the decor in our home a little bit to make it a little more cozy. I have been sharing some tips and ideas for adding fall decor to your home on Instagram and Facebook and have been asked to put them in a blog post so they could be pinned and referred back to later. So, that is what I am doing today.
I know changing decor for a new season or holiday can be overwhelming for some people. Not knowing where to start, not wanting to spend a ton of money and not sure how much or how little decor is needed to welcome a new season. My goal today is to fill this post full of tips and ideas that will take all the guess-work out and inspire you to cozy up your home this season.
Tips For Adding Fall Decor To Your Home
Add New Textures To Your Decor:
When I think about fall (my favorite season), the word cozy comes to mind. Everything about the season is cozy to me; the food, the weather, the clothing, the activities… everything. I try to add cozy textures to our home when fall rolls around. What do I mean by texture? Think soft blankets, knit throw pillows and throws, woven baskets and rustic wood tones. All the textures that come with these things make your home feel cozy and inviting for fall.
Add New Colors To Your Decor:
Fall comes in all colors. Don’t be cornered into believing that orange and yellow are the only colors that will welcome fall. For me, I still use my favorite color green in our decor during fall. I will paint faux pumpkins green or display my green, vintage scales with pumpkins on top. Green eucalyptus stems get added to different areas in our home.
I do like to add other fall colors to our decor as well. Muted oranges and yellows can be found in wood tones and copper pieces. The yellowing pages of old books or vintage flash cards are also appealing for fall.
I use wood, bead garlands all year round and they are especially pretty during fall because of their color. Display them in new ways to make it look a little different for fall. Creamy whites are also a great color to add to your decor. I like to do this with throws, pillows, blankets and faux pumpkins.
Amber bottles have been very popular in recent years. I have found them at thrift stores, estate sales and yard sales. They are a great color for fall and you can add sprigs from your yard to them for a little extra decoration.
Position Items In A New Way To Welcome Fall:
This is a great way to add fall without a lot of work. I love old books and we have them all over our home. One way I change them up for fall is display them so the pages are facing forward. Usually, the pages of old books are a very muted yellow/orange color that really reads fall when you have a stack of them together. I also use wood cake stands to display faux pumpkins or wood bowls. Wood or brass candlesticks make great pedestals for pumpkins and gourds. I bring out copper mugs and pans and fill them with dollar leaves I found at Target or sprigs from the yard.
Hang a copper pot on the back of some shelves to add the color and height you need. Like I mentioned earlier, I place faux pumpkins on my vintage scales so they are still in the decor, but have a bit a fall flair for the new season. Bring out wood bowls and trays you may have stashed away and fill them with pumpkins and gourds or take a field trip and search for acorns to put inside (bake them in the oven first to get rid of any bugs). Scrabble tiles are perfect for fall!
I pick up Scrabble games whenever I find them at yard sales and thrift stores. Put the tiles in clear jars and vases to add some whimsy to your fall decor. The fall possibilities are endless. They are all around you. You just have to be open to it and give it a try. It will get easier as you do it.
How To Save Money & Still Decorate For Fall
Shop Your Home For Fall Decor:
You don’t have to buy all new fall decor. Just because it is a new season, doesn’t mean you have to spend a ton of money on new decor. Think outside of the box and use a little bit of creativity to add fall to your home from things in your home and your yard! Shopping your home for fall decor takes a little creativity. Don’t just think pumpkins and gourds. Remember to think about what the season brings – leaves, cool weather, football, cozy nights by the fire, etc. Adding cozy blankets and throws to the sofa is an easy way to bring the season to your home.
Maybe you have plaid blankets stored away. Bring them out and add them to living rooms chairs or a basket on the floor. Can you switch some throw pillows around? Maybe the throw pillows you have on your bed have a fall feeling and would be great on the sofa. Your yard is full of great colors, options and textures for fall. Go exploring and see what you can find to add to jars, vases, bowls and other containers you have around the house.
Shop Dollar Stores and Bullseye’s Playground at Target:
Dollar stores are hit and miss, but they sometimes get great things in for new seasons. Always stop in and see what you can find to add to your fall decor. I love finding faux pumpkins and other fall decor in Bullseye’s Playground at Target. They usually have cute decor pieces less than $5. Buy things that are timeless and not trendy so you can use them over and over again and never get tired of them.
Shop Thrift Stores:
I don’t think this one needs any more description. You know my love for thrift stores and yard sales and I have been taking you all along while I shop thrift stores. I have put all the videos on my YouTube channel. Head there to see lots of tips for how to shop thrift stores and the things you must buy when you see them.

Scents Can Make Your Home Feel Like Fall
Around our house, you know it is fall when the “Sweater Weather candle has been released at Bath and Body Works. This candles smells amazing and it is something I love burning in the fall. (I like to burn it all year really. I stock up in the fall so I have enough candles to last me to next fall). When I start burning this candle, our kids always say, “It smells like fall”!
Fall scents are so good and by just making your favorite pumpkin pancakes or baking the best pumpkin bread you will ever eat, your home will smell just like fall. I also feel like having the windows open on a crisp fall afternoon makes the house smell amazing. Fall scents are some of the yummiest all year. Think about your favorite fall desserts, drinks and candle scents and bring those into your home this season.
