Let me repeat that for the people in the back: You do not have to spend a ton of money to decorate your home exactly how you want to. It doesn’t matter the size of your home or the style you love, you can use these easy ways to save money decorating your home.
Easy Ways To Save Money Decorating Your Home
- Shop Your Home
Shopping your home is the only way to decorate your home for FREE!
It is amazing what we all have in our homes that we don’t even realize. It is also amazing how moving items around the house can make you think you redecorated spaces without having to buy anything new. Try this the next time you have to refresh a space or redecorate a room. Remove everything from the space. YES… EVERYTHING! Remove pictures off the wall, roll up rugs, and move furniture out of the room. Now, look at the space. What do you love about this space? How do you live in this space? What would you like to see in this space to make you love it more?
Now, start “decorating” the space again. Make it a challenge. Nothing can be returned where it was and even better – use decor and furniture from other spaces in the house instead of what was in there. Maybe you have a chair in the bedroom that would look amazing in the living room. That dresser in the basement would make a great piece for the entry. Maybe the bench you have at the end of your bed would fit perfectly under the front window. The art you have in the hallway would look so much better as a gallery wall in the dining room. You will be amazed at what you can come up with just from what you already have. Look at things in a different way and be open to moving things from one space to another.
- Thrift Stores
Thrift stores are your best-kept secret when it comes to finding easy ways to save money decorating your home.
You can find so many amazing decor at thrift stores. They can have beautiful furniture pieces as well. You do have to go often and you do have to keep an open mind. It is also important to keep your budget in mind. Thrift stores are just like any other store. Just because it is in a thrift store doesn’t mean it is a great deal. Be cognizant of pricing so you can be sure you aren’t overspending at thrift stores.
- Yard Sales/Estate Sales
Yard sales and estate sales are two more places that are great for finding amazing, inexpensive decor and furniture for your home.
Just like the thrift stores, be careful with the pricing. Where garage sales are usually on the cheaper side, estate sales can be very pricey depending on the area and who is hosting the sale. Just be mindful of the prices and what you are paying for the item you are getting.

- Ready For A Makeover
Make over the furniture and decor you already have!
You already have items in your home. You have furniture pieces and decor that you may not love anymore. Give it a makeover! You can find a ton of furniture makeover inspiration HERE. It is amazing what a coat of paint and some new hardware can do to a piece of furniture. It can make it look like a totally different piece. The same goes for home decor. Do you have frames that are outdated? Spray paint them. Do you have an old canvas lying around? Recreate a piece of art you saw in a retail store. Makeover pieces you already have to get a totally new look in your home.
- Ask Family and Friends
Asking family and friends is a smart way to get free and/or inexpensive decor and furniture for your home.
Reach out to family and friends and tell them you are wanting to decorate your home but you are working with a tight budget. See if they have any pieces they are wanting to get rid of. Keep an open mind. You can always give their items a makeover if they aren’t the right color or style.
- Sign Up For Emails To Your Favorite Stores
If you find a piece that you have to have for a space at a favorite retail store, sign up for their emails.
You usually get a discount code sent to you when you sign up for store emails. They will also email you when they are having sales. You should also sign up for things like Rakuten (sign up HERE) which pays you when you go to your favorite stores through their site. It is so easy to use and they also search for coupons where you are shopping to ensure you are getting the best deal. I use it all the time when I am buying things online.
- Don’t Be In A Rush
Don’t rush decorating because you will end up not liking the results. If there is one piece of advice I would recommend, it would be to take your time when decorating. It will save you the most money out of all of these ideas. The more time you take, the better the results will be. You will love every piece you have and you won’t waste money just buying things in a hurry to get the space done. It takes time to live in a space to know how you are really going to use it. Be patient. Let the space come together over time. This will ensure every space in your home will be perfect.
