When you see the title of this post, you have to wonder, what four-letter word is she talking about?? I won’t make you read a really long post before I tell you the word. But, the remainder of this post will explain why I say this word is so important. The four-letter word that will change your life is, “JUMP”.
I know what you are thinking. What is she talking about? Lindsay has finally lost it. She is off her rocker.
But, it is true.
Let me explain.
A few years ago, I started writing down goals for myself, for Matt and me together, and for our family at the beginning of each year. I read somewhere that it is important to write your goals down to make them happen. I thought I would give it a try. Before that, all goals were pretty simple and generic and never written down; save more, spend less, more date nights, etc.
Then, a couple of years ago, I told Matt that we needed to think bigger. We always talked about things we wanted to do and where we wanted to be, but we didn’t take it past those conversations. We needed to stop talking and start doing. If we were serious about those things we constantly talked about, then we needed to push harder. We needed to use the Four Letter Word That Will Change Your Life. We needed to JUMP feet first.
So we did.
We wrote down BIG goals. Our initial JUMP was to put it out there. We dug deep and really thought about those BIG things that we never thought would happen, but wished they would.
One of the bigger goals we added to the list was flipping houses and/or investing in rental properties. We never really thought it would happen, but then again, we didn’t really align ourselves to make it happen. We never made the initial JUMP to even write it down. Not this time around. We put it down in our five-year goal plan.
That was two years ago.
After we crossed off our one-year goals, I started looking for properties. I was still comfortable at this stage. I was just looking and doing some research, nothing too scary. No commitment at this stage. Then, after a few months, I got more serious and was really persistent about it.
I wrote many letters and called many numbers. Then, one day while I was at Target, I got a call. The owners of one of the houses I wrote to wanted to sell it!!! I was excited for the call back, but didn’t get too excited because we hadn’t walked through the house yet and I had no idea what they wanted for it. I was still comfortable. It was taking mini JUMPS at this point. All things I hadn’t done before, but working towards that end goal.
The owners needed to show the house to me that day. They had just gotten my letter that day and they were going to call a realtor to list the property the following day. What are the odds of that?? (I used to think things like this were coincidences, but now I know they are well, laid out plans.) Since Matt works about 45 minutes from our home, I needed to go through the house on my own. My dad was a phone call and was happy to walk through it with me.
We have helped my dad flip a few homes and he used to be in real estate and construction so he is a wealth of knowledge for us. After we saw the house, dad and I thought it was a great house for our first flip.
I was so nervous. I called Matt at work to fill him in. I knew this was something we wanted to do, but I was nervous. We have helped my dad flip homes, but those were “his”. That was safe. This time around, the house would be in our name. It would be “ours”. A little different.
Matt, as always, was the rational, calm voice he always is. He talked me off my “scared ledge” and reminded me of our goals. He told me that we needed to JUMP and do this. It is there for the taking and we just have to get on board. #thankfulforthisman
We had to JUMP. We had to use the four letter word that will change your life.
We JUMPED.
We were crossing another goal off our list. I am not going to lie and say I wasn’t uncomfortable. I was a nervous wreck going to sign all the paperwork. But, in that moment, I knew we were growing. I knew we were finally moving and not standing still. Being uncomfortable is part of the growth process. If things are always comfortable, you aren’t moving forward. You have to JUMP!
I have been thinking about writing this post for a long time but didn’t know how to. Then, I joined the launch team for a new book and the answer was right there.
KariAnne from Thistlewood Farms is a blogger I have followed since I started my blog. Her home is gorgeous and she has fabulous ideas, but the story she has to tell in her new book, “So Close To Amazing” makes me love her even more.
I took the book with me to the pool the first time we went this summer. I finished it that afternoon. She was talking about the JUMP she and her husband took and where it lead them. After I read that book, it was more apparent that I needed to write this post. She gave my post a name. The word JUMP is just a four-letter word until you apply it to your life and the goals you want to achieve.
If you are looking for a great book that will keep you laughing and entertained, this is one for you. If you are looking for a book that will make you feel better about not always having anything together, this is the book for you. You can preorder the book on Amazon right now by going HERE.
Do you need to make the JUMP and put The Four Letter Word That Will Change Your Life into action? What is holding you back?

Thank you! Go for it! The book is so good!
Good morning, Lindsay!
Excellent post! I can tell you are one of those people with an awesome eye for what is needed in which part of the house, how to decorate it, how to keep going even when you are wiped out and also never gives up.
Your advice about not only setting goals but writing them down, too, is an awesome one. I actually used to do that a lot, otherwise, nothing ever got accomplished. Perhaps that is why I have been accomplishing a lot less in my house than I used to. 🙂 I honestly can’t say why I stopped writing them, but I think now I will start writing them again.
Thanks for the reminder! I am now following you on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Pinterest.
Linda
Thank you so much! There is something about writing the goals down that works!
I love your post, Lindsay!
Yes, sometimes we just need to JUMP!
Congratulations on your first flip!!
Thank you so much!
Lindsey – what a scary risk but equally exciting one! I so glad you jumped! I can’t wait to follow along on your adventure and hopefully we can get to the place where we can jump like you all did!
Thank you! It was an exciting adventure. We are glad it is over and now looking for another one! 😉
Lindsay,
I love this! How exciting and scary at the same time!!! Being a part of KariAnne’s book launch team and really gotten me out of my comfort zone too LOL. It’s been really nice getting to know you through our group. I hope you have a great week!!!
You too Wendy!
Lindsay,
Way to go! Good luck as you and your husband “flip” this house as yours, not just helping your dad. One of the best parts about being on the So Close to Amazing Launch Team is getting to know such wonderful people like you. In this crazy world, finding others who uplift and encourage others is a blessing. Thanks for being one of those people.
Judith
I totally agree! So glad I took the “jump” to join this team! It has been amazing!
Lindsay, what a great story. I think “jump” is a shorter way to say “leap of faith”. It made me think of all the things big and small that would never have been accomplished if someone had not had the courage to jump. Good luck with your flipping adventure.
It is! I totally agree! We got the flip done and sold in 7 weeks! Thanks!
