Green Bench Makeover Tutorial

3 Mins read

I love the color green and little benches make me so happy. This green bench makeover was easy to do and updated and outdated piece in no time.

This yard sale find became a cute green bench though an easy makeover. A little paint, glaze and a surprise inside make this bench a fun piece for any room.

This green bench makeover could not have been easier. I found the bench at a yard sale. It was a rainy Saturday morning and Matt and I ventured out to see what we could find. We stopped at seven sales and didn’t find anything. We said we would stop at one more and then head home.

The last sale was better than the others we stopped at. I bought this bench, a small end table and a couple of small decor items. The morning wasn’t a total loss. Matt and I got to spend some time together, I found some home decor pieces and a couple of projects that I can share with you!

This bench doesn’t look like anything too exciting, but it was a good piece to share how easy it is to shop for pieces at yard sales and customize them to fit your style perfectly and save a ton of money doing it! Decorating your home doesn’t have to break your budget and I love showing you how to do it through projects like this.

Supplies Used In This Makeover:

Kudzu – Dixie Belle Paint

Zibra Paint Brush (Can’t live without these brushes!)

Chalk Couture Supplies

“Haint Blue” Paint from Dixie Belle Paint

“Enhance” Glaze from Velvet Finishes

This green bench makeover was easy to do with paint, glaze and a fun transfer on top!

To start the makeover, I cleaned the bench inside and out. Then, I used my favorite Zibra paint brush to cover the bench in two coats of Kudzu” from Dixie Belle Paint.

I have been an avid promoter of Zibra brushes since I started using them. They are amazing and they make my work so much easier. I would not DIY without them.

I have never used “Kudzu” paint color before so I was excited to see it on this bench. It is a beautiful, spring green color. The color is so pretty, but once I got it on the bench, I wanted to tone it down a bit and give it a little more dimension. I brushed “Enhance” Glaze from Velvet Finishes all over the bench to deepen the Kudzu color and add some character to the bench.

The glaze is very forgiving. You can add more to darken the look or wipe it off to lighten it. It is not a scary glaze to use because you can move it around to get the look you want.

The bench does have storage so it was the perfect excuse to add an unexpected pop of color to the project. I chose “Haint Blue” Paint from Dixie Belle Paint for the inside. Again, I have not used this color before. It is the slightest blue color (if that makes sense). Very pretty. It was a great color for the inside of this bench.

Of course, I can never leave good enough alone. Once I had all the painting and glazing done, I thought it would be fun to add something else to the top of the bench. I searched through my Chalk Couture transfers and the “Home” transfer fit it perfectly!

Here is a short video to show you how easy it was to put the transfer on the bench:

The transfer made this bench even more fun.

When it was all done, I put the bench outside in our back porch and when the kids came home from school they loved it. I am doing projects all the time so seeing new things around the house is not new to them. When they actually notice it and comment on something – that makes me smile. They liked the color, the words and having it in the back porch.

Would you have picked this bench up at a yard sale? What color would you have painted it?
