How To Make A Homemade Pinata Using A Kitchen Staple

I have a messy homemade pinata project to share with you today that will make your next celebration extra fun. I have been making homemade pinatas for years. It all started when our kids were little and we started hosting birthday parties and holiday parties. I did not want to pay the hefty price tag stores wanted for pinatas. No way!

The kids are just going to destroy the thing anyway so why waste the money? I knew there had to be an easy way to make a pinata at home and I started trying different methods. I found an easy way to make a homemade pinata using a staple you always have in your kitchen…….. FLOUR!

Supplies Needed To Make A Homemade Pinata:

Balloon

Newspaper (cut in strips)

Flour

Water

Fishing string

Viva Vantage paper towels

Colored Tape

Misc. supplies to make the pinata you want (googly eyes, construction paper, etc.)

Directions To Make A Homemade Pinata:

First, blow up the balloon and set it inside a bowl to hold it in place as you work on it.

Then, mix the flour and water together to make a thin glue consistency.

Put your newspaper strips in the flour and water mixture a few at a time. Pull one strip out at a time and slide it between two fingers to remove the excess flour mixture. You want the newspaper wet, but not soaked.

Place the newspaper strips all over the balloon.

Turn the balloon as you work to ensure you cover all of it except the tied end of the balloon. Add a few layers of newspaper strips to the balloon to make it a strong pinata.

Now, let me be totally honest here….. homemade pinatas are MESSY! You will find the flour mixture everywhere! When you are sliding the excess glue off the paper strips and slapping it on the balloon, it is amazing where the flour mixture ends up.

Your table and your supplies will be covered in it. Your floor will be too. That is why Viva Towels are a must in the supply list for homemade pinatas.

I like that Viva Vantage has a scrubby texture. The flour mixture needs to be scrubbed sometimes to get it all up.

Once you have the mess picked up, hang your pinata to dry. Depending on how many layers you added, it can take a couple days to get fully dry. Make sure it is fully dry before you move on to the next steps.

We decided on a spider pinata for an upcoming Halloween party we are having. To make my pinata a spider, I spray painted it black once it dried.

When the spray paint dried, I cut the tied end of the balloon.

The balloon shrivels up inside the pinata and you can dump it out through the hole it left.

Our daughter wanted a spider pinata. That is such an easy shape to make.

I cut eight strips from black construction paper and folded them accordion style to make spider legs.

I hot glued them to the sides of the pinata.

My daughter wanted the spider to have many eyes so that was easy with hot glue and googly eyes.

Now, you are asking “This is all great, but how are you going to hang it?”

I have you covered. And, it is easy.

I use a pin to poke a hole in the top of the pinata. Then, I push fishing string inside and pull it out through the hole that the balloon left.

Next, I tie it to something that will hold inside the pinata and not tear through the top. This time, I used a small piece of wood, but sticks from our yard have worked perfectly too.

Now, the homemade pinata is ready to fill with candy and other goodies.

My daughter wanted me to leave the hole open on the spider because it looked like a mouth, but I didn’t want the kids to be able to see what was in it. I just put a piece of black duct tape on the hole to cover it up. There are so many different colored tapes in the market that will match any pinata you make.

Hang your homemade pinata in a tree if your party is outside or from anything you have inside your home for an indoor party. We have used everything from sticks to swords to broom handles to crack open our pinatas. It just depends on what theme we have for the party.
