“How Flipping Furniture Changed Our Lives” is a story I never thought I’d write. If I knew then, what I know now, I would have paid more attention to the hints that were given to me along the way. I could have started a lot earlier than I did.
Flipping furniture and DIY was something Matt and I had to do out of necessity in our first house.
We moved into that house the day after we got married. I was so excited to have an entire house to decorate just as I wanted. I spent all of my teenage years decorating and organizing my bedroom. Having an entire house to decorate and organize on my own was so exciting. I ran into a problem pretty quickly. Our budget was not going to let me decorate as I wanted to. It was very frustrating. But, it also made me very determined to figure out how to get what I wanted without breaking the bank.
I have always been a creative person. Being able to push my creativity to figure out a way to decorate our home on a dime was something that made me discover passions I didn’t know I had. When we moved into our second house, I continued decorating on a budget and DIYing every part of it. We knew we were going to be in this house longer than the last, so we wanted to really make it ours.
It was in this house that people started noticing the way we were doing things.
Friends and family were amazed at how much money we were saving while still being able to decorate how we wanted. As I continued to pick up pieces and make them over to fit our style, I had to sell furniture that wasn’t working any longer. This is when I started seeing that I could make a side income from the pieces we were making over. I started talking to Matt about where I could see this going. He was on board to make it happen. We started going out to “pick” items that we could make over and sell.
Flipping furniture was the side hustle that made things possible for us. I would use the money for things we didn’t want to pay for from our 9 to 5 incomes. The side hustle paid for vacations. It paid down so much debt. Eventually, after we had kids, it paid the tuition for our kids to go to the school.
Fast forward a few years and here we are. This little side hustle has turned into a full-time job for me. “How Flipping Furniture Changed Our Lives” is a story I can talk a lot about. I now can share it with others who are looking to flip furniture as well. Who knew?!
