There are so many ways to make over furniture. In this post, I am talking about painted pieces and how to give new life to painted furniture.

  • Remove The Paint:

One of the ways that you can give new life to painted furniture is to remove the paint. You can remove paint in many ways. You can use a stripper solution to remove paint. This process is messy and does take some time. Another way to remove paint is with a heat gun. This doesn’t work on all painted pieces but when it does work, it can be easier than the stripping solution. The trick is to keep the heat gun moving and don’t let it sit in one place for too long so you don’t burn the wood underneath. You can also get lucky and find a piece that you can sand to remove the paint.

  • Distress

If you find a piece of painted furniture that would look amazing distressed, take a small piece of sandpaper to a corner and see how the paint reacts. I have picked up numerous painted pieces that I brought home and just distressed with some sanding and then sold them. Distressing will not work on all painted pieces. It will depend on the kind of paint used, the age of the paint, what they used under and over the paint, etc. It is always worth a shot if you find a good painted candidate for distressing.

  • Paint Over

I get asked a lot if I paint pieces that have already been painted. My answer is “Yes, depending..”. You can paint over pieces that have already been painted. There are also painted pieces that aren’t worth painting over. I have picked up many painted pieces over the years that I painted a new color on in order to sell it. Painting over painted pieces is a great way to breathe new life into them. You just want to make sure the initial paint job was done well.

  • New Hardware

This is one of the easiest ways to breathe new life into painted furniture. Just add new hardware! You can change the entire look of a painted piece with hardware alone.

  • Add/Remove Legs

You can make a painted piece of furniture look so different by just adding or removing legs. You can replace the legs a piece already has or add new legs to make the piece totally different. We have picked up furniture pieces that had damaged legs and just removed them altogether. When you are doing this, you want to make sure you are compromising the piece and that the leg removal doesn’t make the height awkward.

  • Add Stencil/Transfer

If a piece has been painted well and you like the color, one way to breathe new life into it is by adding a stencil or transfer. This is an easy way to add a design feature without having to repaint the entire piece.
