How To Make A Bench From A Bed – Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Supplies Needed For This Project:
Wood Headboard & Footboard (ours was a double)
Board For Seat (the size will depend on the size of the bench)
Scrap Boards To Create Braces
All-In-One Paint (used Black Sands color)
Gel Stain (used Walnut color)
How To Make A Bench From A Bed – Step 2: Measure & Cut the Bed Frame
You will need to cut the footboard to create the sides of your bench. First, decide how far you want the sides to come out, and then measure and cut the footboard accordingly.
How To Make A Bench From A Bed – Step 3: Attach The Sides
Attach the sides (pieces you just cut) to the headboard using a drill and pocket hole jig.
How To Make A Bench From A Bed – Step 4: Measure & Cut For Seat and Skirt
Now that you have the sides on the bench, you can measure the seat to see what size board (or boards if you are doing a seat made out of slats of wood) you need to cut. If you want to add a “skirt” to the front of the seat as we did, you will need to measure and cut for that too.
How To Make A Bench From A Bed – Step 5: Cut & Attach Braces For Underneath The Seat
Use scrap boards cut to size to create braces around the base of the seat.
How To Make A Bench From A Bed – Step 6: Attach Seat To Braces and Skirt To Seat
Attach the seat to the braces and then use a nail gun to attach the skirt to the front of the seat if you are adding one.
How To Make A Bench From A Bed – Step 7: Use Wood Filler
Fill any holes around the bench with wood filler.
How To Make A Bench From A Bed – Step 8: Sand The Entire Bench
Next, use a sander and sand the entire bench. Make sure the wood on the seat and the skirt are smooth. Give the headboard and sides (footboard) a good scuff-sanding.
How To Make A Bench From A Bed – Step 8: Paint or Stain
Now your bench is ready for paint or stain or both! I painted everything but the two front legs on this bench.
Now that your bench is complete, place it in a prominent location in your home and enjoy it! This bench is perfect for an entryway, bedroom, or living room.
With just a few basic materials and some DIY know-how, you can transform an old bed into a stunning bench that will add charm and character to your home.
Follow these simple steps and the video tutorial linked below, and you’ll have a beautiful bench in no time!
