How To Make A Vision Board

3 Mins read

I have been creating videos that have shown my vision board in the background and have been getting a lot of questions about it. How do you make one? What kinds of things do you put on yours? How long does it take? Do they really work? I have thought about a vision board, but I don’t know where to get started.

I thought it would be a fun topic to talk about here and share how easy it is to make a vision board. You can make it difficult I am sure, but that isn’t how I do things. For me, creating a vision board needs to be fun and simple.

Let’s start with the definition of a vision board. A vision board is a collage of images and words representing a person’s wishes or goals, intended to serve as inspiration or motivation.

You don’t have to own a business or work in corporate America to have a vision board. It is for anyone who has wishes, goals and aspirations and who wants some extra inspiration and motivation to reach them. Stay at home moms and dads, kids, teachers, grandparents – – ANYONE can have a vision board. ANYONE can benefit from making a vision board.

There are a few supplies you need to create a vision board. This is typically what I use:

  • – Magazines, Catalogs, Newspapers, Books – anything you can cut words and pictures out of

  • – Paper

  • – Pens, Pencils, Markers, etc.

  • – Scissors

  • – A surface for your board – bulletin board, magnetic board, poster board, etc.

  • – Tacks, staples, magnets to attach the paper to the board

If you have thought about a vision board, but don't know where to start, these tips will tell you how to make a vision board easily and effectively.

Put It Together:

  • The first thing I always do is sit down and figure out how long I want the vision board to last. It is a one year board, five-year board or just a general vision board? When I narrow that down, then I start writing down all the dreams, “visions”, ideas, goals and aspirations on paper. I don’t limit myself. I write down anything and everything. No dream or goal is too big. This part is the most fun because the sky is the limit.

  • Once I have the specifics down and I know what I want my vision board to represent, I start scouring magazines, newspaper, books – whatever I have, to look for pictures and words that capture what the board is all about. For me, I am a visual person, so the more pictures the better. This part is just like kindergarten art class. Cut out anything that represents what you want your board to be filled with. Turn on some music and have fun with it!

  • Once I have everything cut out, I lay them all out on my bulletin board and rearrange them in a way that is appealing to me. Again, there is no wrong way to do this. You can’t mess up.

  • When everything is where I want it, I use a stapler or tacks to stick them to the bulletin board.

  • When everything is on the board, it is time to hang the board on the wall. I like to hang mine where I can see it from my desk every day. For you, it may be your bedroom, your bathroom, your living room or your kitchen. Hang it where you will see it the most. You want to be reminded often of the things you put on there.

That is it! That is how easy it is. There is something to be said about documenting goals, aspirations, ideas, etc. where you can see them every day. It works. It seems so simple (and it is), but yet it works so well.

I would love to know what kind of board you would like to create. Have you ever created a vision board? Tell me all your thoughts in the comments below!
