This set of kitchen canisters was left in the flip house we just bought. (See the video tour of our flip house HERE). The people we bought the house from had two estate sales in the house before we bought it and the kitchen canisters never sold. When we were cleaning out the house, I saw them and walked by them not thinking twice. Then, when I started picking up the kitchen, I looked at them again and noticed the detail they had. The canisters were so dirty and the wood was not pretty so the detail didn’t stand out that well. I knew a little makeover was all they needed to transform them into something pretty again.
This is what the kitchen canisters looked like when I brought them home.
They needed a good cleaning first. To be honest, everything in that house needed a good cleaning. 😉

Supplies Used In This Makeover:
“Drop Cloth” Dixie Belle Paint
Enhance Glaze from Velvet Finishes
Lysol Wipes To Clean The Canisters
After I cleaned the kitchen canisters (which took forever), I put a couple of rough coats of “Drop Cloth” Dixie Belle Paint on each canister and lid. I didn’t want the paint to be perfect. I wanted these canisters to still have the worn in look they originally had, but freshened up with a lighter color.
Once the paint was dry, I used “Enhance Glaze” from Velvet Finishes all over the canisters. Using the glaze made the detail and the words on the canisters stand out really well! You can really appreciate the detail for what it is now.
I use an old towel to rub the glaze over the paint. It is very forgiving right when you put it on. Once it is set, it stays put, but as I am rubbing it onto a surface, if I feel like I got too much on, I use a little water and it comes off. I have been obsessed with the Enhance for a couple of my latest projects. See what it did to this blue dresser makeover.
This set has come a long way. It had looked like it had been through the ringer when I brought it home and it still isn’t perfect, but I like the imperfections now. The paint and stain clung to different areas which made the pieces still look worn, but in a pretty way.
Some of the canisters came out better than others in showing the details they have. Let’s talk about that detail! It wasn’t even looked at through two estate sales, but now it is what stands out the most and is the best part of the set now.
These kitchen canisters took a little bit of work and some trial and error figuring out the best way to bring out the detail, but they were so worth it.
Would you have looked twice at this set if you saw them at an estate sale?
