I want to thank Kilz and Magnolia Home Paint for partnering with me on this family room makeover.
I am super excited to finally share this makeover! Not only was I able to try a paint line I have been dying to try, but the transformation in our family room with the paint alone has made me appreciate this space that much more. Matt and I have been talking about making a change in the family room for a long time. We felt like the paint color on the walls was too dark and we wanted to lighten it up. Here are a few “before” pics.
When I was searching through the different paint colors from Magnolia Home Paint, I was overwhelmed with how many colors I liked. To be honest, it was hard to narrow down the colors. We knew we wanted a color that would help lighten the room. It also helped knowing that we are keeping our green sectional because that directed my selection to fewer colors that would work.
When the first box from Kilz arrived at our house, you would have thought I won the lottery. I am not kidding. As soon as I got the box, I shared it all on my Instagram stories. Those stories accurately depicted how excited I was. (Follow my behind-the-scenes Instagram shenanigans HERE.)
I received samples of the five colors I narrowed down, a fan deck of all the Magnolia Home Paint colors, some Magnolia Home Paint brushes and these ingenious things.
Joanna made some of her paint color samples on “stickers”. You stick these on your wall without having to actually put paint on the walls. I didn’t receive the samples until after I got the paint samples so I put the actual paint samples on our wall to choose the color.
If there is one thing you take away from this post, let it be this: Always put samples on your wall before choosing a paint color. ALWAYS! The light in the room changes throughout the entire day. Look at each color throughout the day to see what you like and don’t like. We put these samples up in two different areas in the family room just to make sure.
As soon as I had the colors on the wall, I started eliminating a few, but lived with them all for a few days on the wall so I could check the colors throughout the day and night. It is so hard to pick a paint color from a small swatch. That is why I love that Magnolia Home Paint has the big sticky-back paper swatches for their colors to give you a better representation of what the color will look like.
After a few days and a lot of back and forth, we decided on the color “Gatherings” for our family room. I don’t know about you, but sometimes the name of the paint color will help me choose. That didn’t happen in this case, but the fact that this is our family room, “Gatherings” seems fitting.

We used the HomeRight EZ-Twist PaintStick to paint the family room. This tool makes painting a room like this a breeze.
Now, I have to tell you all about our thoughts on the Magnolia Home Paint.
Drum roll, please …………………………
WE LOVED IT (and I am not just saying that).
I used the 1 1/2″ Magnolia Home paint brush on all the trim while Matt was at work. The paint had amazing coverage! I didn’t say anything to Matt when he got home and starting painting the rest of the walls with the HomeRight EZ-Twist PaintStick. When he got done with one wall, he called me down and said, “This is really good paint! I can’t believe how well it is covering!” Not kidding. We only had to do two coats to cover all of the walls.
The room looks drastically different.
“Gatherings” made the room a lot lighter and more cozy. After we had the walls painted, I wanted to repaint the coffee table. You can see that transformation HERE. It made a world of difference in the space. I really thought about getting a brand new sectional or buying an expensive slip cover for our sectional in the family room. After the paint was on the walls and the coffee table was made over, I loved the color of the sectional in the space again. Paint makes a world of difference.
I was thinking about backing our built-ins with wallpaper, but I am glad I didn’t. I painted it with “Gatherings” and it looks great. It gives a neutral background for everything on the shelves to stand out.
I finally got to put our gallery wall up in the family room. We had a family tree made and I added an old photo of my grandpa in the war and some other odds and ends. The bookshelf changes all the time. When I find some new things, it will look different.

We are so excited to have this room painted. It made the biggest difference and we love to spend more time in it now. I am working on the back wall that you can’t see in these photos, but I will share that as soon as Matt has time to hang some things for me.
At the end of all of this, I do have to say that we have used Magnolia Home Paint in our recent flip house because we loved the paint that much. It doesn’t cost any more than other paints and the quality is amazing. We would recommend it to anyone who asked us.
Have you used Magnolia Home Paint? What color did you choose?
I don’t know if you have heard the great news or not, but you can get the Magnolia Home Paint at Target! I wrote a post all about that news and how to get the paint HERE.

I am a professional painter. Tried Magnolia paint recently at the homeowner’s request. I absolutely hated the product. Stays wet so long that drips and sags occur, its not very sandable, and after an eternity to dry, it remains very soft and gummy for a long time. Under performing product especially for the price. Will never use it in the future and will dissuade anyone to use it. There are lots of other less expensive paints that can out perform it. Magnolia brushes are also way to expensive and low quality.
