It is summer home tour season!
This year, I did not join any of my blogging friends in a group tour because I wasn’t sure what I would be able to commit to with the flip house we bought. I was right. We have been crazy busy and blogging has been done during any break I have from the house. The good news is that we can see the end nearing at the flip house and life might get back to normal soon. Until then, I am hanging on and working through the craziness.
I wanted to bring you a glimpse into a new addition we added to our living room this summer. I have been waiting and searching for farmhouse shutters to add to either side of our front windows. IThey are easy to find in antique stores and salvage stores, but are way more than I want to spend.
How I Found Farmhouse Shutters To Add To Our Living Room
I never gave up the search and about a month into yard sale season, I came upon three, chippy white farmhouse shutters. Shutters that would fit our wall perfectly! I couldn’t get out of the van fast enough at the sale. I walked around them, picked them up (they are so heavy) and then the lady having the sale came over to me. She told me that she rescued the shutters off of a house in Dubuque, Iowa that was built in the 1800’s.
She got a lot of them and has been wanting her husband to help her add them to their home in different rooms. He wasn’t fond of her vision and wanted her to sell some of the shutters. I told her that I totally got her vision and that I appreciated that she was willing to sell three of them. I appreciated her price even more. $10 each!!!!!! What?! She was so happy to see them go to someone who likes them as much as she did. I was happy to oblige.
As I have said over and over again, sometimes it is the stories behind the pieces I find that are just as fun as the pieces themselves. I will always remember the shutter lady and where she rescued the shutters from. A piece of a 1800 farmhouse is hanging in our home. You can’t get more character and charm than that. When anyone asks me about them, I have a story to tell. You can only get that by decorating with yard sale/thrift store/flea market finds!

The shutters were the perfect size for our living room. They reach the base boards and frame the windows like they were meant for them.
The shutters have a different look because they chipped in different places. I am sure that is due to where they were placed on the farmhouse for all these years.
I always wanted something on each side of the front window. It is the small additions like this that make me feel like I have redecorated the entire space. Since we have been at the flip house so much, I have had an itch to switch this room around when the flip house is done. I want to take everything out and rethink it a little bit. I have some plans for our entry and the wall behind the sofa.
When I shared a video tour of this room, I opened the hutch and knew right away I needed to do a refresh in this room. I get this way every few months. It is time to regroup, take things out, purge and redecorate. Our garage is jammed packed with new finds so I am excited to shop that, bring new things in and sell things that aren’t working anymore.
For now, I am excited about the farmhouse shutter addition. It made this summer home tour post happen and it gave me a makeover “fix” for the time being.
Thanks for stopping by for my summer home tour.
Do you have shutters in your decor? Where did you find them?

As soon as I saw those shutters in your IG photo I needed to see more! They’re perfect for this room and I agree, I love the story behind them even more! (I recently saw some on an online garage sake site and was so disappointed when I missed getting them!)
Thank you Kendra!
No I don’t have shutters, but I have wanted them for a LONG time. I LOVE your story! It is perfect, and so are the shutters. They look like they were custom made for your space. I also love your decorating style. Country farmhouse with a bit of French thrown in, is what I am going for. Thanks for the inspiration! If you snag any more of those shutters, I will drive to eastern Iowa to pick them up!! Can’t wait to see your blog on your flip house when you are done.
Thank you Sue! I will pick them up if I find them again! 😉
Lindsay, the space is beautiful! I love all the sunlight coming in. It’s a gorgeous, summer space!
Thank you Amanda!
I love the shutters and I love your style. I am going to be copying most of what I see here (smile ) in my living room as this is the look I am trying to achieve. Thanks for posting and looking forward to the complete tour.
Thank you!
