I am finally sharing this teen boy’s bedroom makeover with you! If you have been following along with me on Facebook and Instagram, you have seen some of the progress and behind-the-scenes looks. It has been a fun room to do and the outcome has made it one of my favorite rooms in the house. Landen loves it too (which is equally important 😉 ).
Bedroom makeovers have been a theme in our house for the past couple of months. It all started with Gabrielle’s teen girl’s bedroom makeover and then, I started planning a makeover for our bedroom. I knew I wanted to give Landen’s room a teen boy’s bedroom makeover, but he kept saying he didn’t really need one. So, I moved forward with our bedroom. We painted the walls and we figured out the best way to make DIY closet door that saved us a ton of space in our room.
We were making good progress in our bedroom and then we hit a wall.
The bed I ordered was lost in transit and they couldn’t find it. I had to scramble and find a new bed option, but it wouldn’t get here for over a month! The bed was the next step in our makeover, so I was stuck. I couldn’t hang the new sconces or figure out what other furniture we would need until the bed was in place. Being stuck in the progress, I decided to start Landen’s bedroom makeover. I started taking everything out of his room before I even had a plan. Nothing like a little frustration to get another project started and done.
Landen did not have as many opinions as Gabrielle did with her makeover. I had to figure out different ways to get him involved and tell me what he wanted. I would bring him ideas, samples, and colors of different things and he would tell me if he liked them or didn’t. That really helped give me a direction for his room. His favorite color is green (like his mama 😉 ). I wanted to paint his walls green.
I grabbed many samples of different green colors and he was really drawn to the darker options. That made me so happy, but Matt was a little weary. Landen has a small room and Matt thought the darker color would make it look smaller and like a dungeon. I told him to trust me. I think dark colors get a bad rap. They shouldn’t. They can be gorgeous in all kinds of spaces and I think they need to be used more often.
When Landen and I were going over darker green colors, one of them really stood out to us.
We liked the color, but we both thought it might be too dark. So, I got two more samples of the same color but mixed one at 50% and one at 25%. I put those two colors on the wall with the original color to see what we liked. The entire family voted and we all chose the same color. We liked “Thyme Green” (mixed at 25%) IT WAS PERFECT!
Once we had all the walls painted, it was time to work on the cedar-planked wall. Landen is obsessed with basketball. When we were talking about ideas for his room, he liked the idea of adding wood planks on the wall to look like a basketball court. He also thought that if I put wood planks on the wall, we should paint on a 3-point line and a free-throw line. I told him that we weren’t going to do that, but that I would be happy to add some wood to one of the walls in his room. I decided to plank the back wall of his room only, from floor to ceiling. It looked so good when it was done.
We used the tongue and groove cedar planks for the wall. Tongue and groove boards make it so easy to install. Matt did have to cut them, but we weren’t spacing them out like we did with the DIY ship lap in our entry. It was a fairly easy project and the outcome looks great!

Once the cedar-planked wall was installed, the closet came next. If you have been around for some time, you know that we aren’t fans of the bifold closet doors that were original to the house. Having small bedrooms means that you need to creative with every square inch that you have. The bifold doors took up too much space in our bedrooms so we came up with a new sliding closet door for Gabrielle’s room and a DIY closet door in our room. Landen’s closet is a little different in that there isn’t a way for a sliding door to work on his closet. So, we removed the bifold doors and built-in an old dresser into the closet. Matt built some shelves on the right side for more storage as well.
We would like to eventually hide the hanging area of the closet, but we haven’t come up with a great option yet. So, I went on with the makeover as if the closet would stay open as it has been since we removed the bi-fold doors. I painted the dresser in one of my favorite Dixie Belle Paint colors and added 12″ Studio Cabinet Pull in Matte Black from Hickory Hardware. The dresser looks so good in the new room. It still amazes me what a new paint color and some new hardware can do. You don’t have to make it difficult. Start simple and see what the outcome is.
After the closet, I started planning what was going to go in the room. We were starting from scratch so we needed everything. I started with some of the easier things that I knew were going to be added. The bedding was first. While we were making over Landen’s room, he was sleeping on the trundle part of Gabrielle’s bed and he loved the Beddy’s bedding. I wanted to surprise him with a set of his own. You can read all about our love for Beddy’s Beds and see a video tutorial that shows you what the bedding is and why it is so amazing. I decided on the “Naturally Boho” bedding for Landen’s room and I added a surprise with the large print basketball pillowcase. He loved the surprise.
Beddy’s is so perfect for the design of Landen’s room because I knew I was going to choose a bed that we could store things under. The Beddy’s bedding doesn’t hang over the bed. It fits around the mattress and looks good all the time. Great for kids. It is a bed set all in one. You get the fitted sheet, top sheet, and comforter in one. Every set is handmade and there is a minky option that our kids love. It is so easy to wash, comes in many colors and designs, and fits all bed sizes; from twin to king.
I got a lot of questions about Beddy’s when I initially shared Gabrielle’s set, so I created a quick video to show you how the bedding works, what we love about it, and answers to all the questions I received about it. The bedding was an easy choice.
Now, I had to choose a bed. I knew I wanted a black bed to go with the new look in this room. This was a great, affordable option and it looks good. I do have to say though, that I will be on the hunt for an antique iron bed and if I find one at a reasonable price, I will replace the one I got him.
Not only did I need to find a bed, but I got new mattresses for all the makeovers in our home. I read some positive reviews for this mattress, so I got it for Landen and Gabrielle’s room. They both love them and Matt and I have both laid on them and think they are very comfortable. I want to see how well they wear and what they are like in six months and a year to give a full review, but for now, they are GREAT!
I had the bed, mattress and bedding figured out. Now, I needed to find a new fan. I chose this one. I wanted to go with black and keep it simple. This fan comes with a remote that controls the light and the fan. He will enjoy it when it starts getting warmer out.
The rug for Landen’s room was something that took a little longer to find. I really wanted to find a rug to fit most of his room and when Matt was measuring, he measured shorter. UGH! It’s okay. I was able to find this Safavieh Natural Fiber Kentigern Border Area Rug and it looked really good in this new room. I really wish it was a little bigger, but I was not going through the hassle of taking it back. We just pulled it over more in the room and had less under his bed. It works. I wanted a lighter, more neutral rug in his room because of the dark green walls. This rug comes in many colors. It is a good natural rug if you have been looking for a reasonable one.
The curtain rod was something I shared in this video when I took you shopping with me to six of my favorites stores. The curtains were a Home Goods find. If you were following along with this makeover on Instagram, you know that I had to buy a replacement set of these curtains because of a paint mishap. It was a stressful day and a very long story to get into here. Make sure you are following along with me on Instagram too! I am always sharing something over there.
I still needed to add some more storage to this teen boy’s bedroom makeover. We loved this shelving unit. It fit the space perfectly and gives him a lot of shelves to store some of his favorite things. The shelves Matt added to the closet are good for things too, but since it is such a small room, he needed even more storage. I added some fun things to the shelves like the vintage suitcase (hello! closed storage), my favorite vintage, green box, wood Connect 4 game, vintage trophies, a small globe, and a vintage clock. There are other things on the shelves as well. I thought a lot of this might just be for me to take final photos with, but Landen liked everything and I think they may stay for a while. 🙂
We spray painted the basketball hoop Matt made for Landen’s old room and hung it above his bed. Instead of the bright orange rim, I spray-painted it black for this teen boy’s bedroom makeover. It looks so much better to me. We also needed to add some kind of hooks to the room for coats and backpacks. Of course, I chose my favorite Bungalow Double Hooks from Hickory Hardware. Matt added them to a piece of cedar we had in the garage so he just had to anchor the cedar board to the wall and both screw holes each hook comes with. I added two of the old stools we picked up at an estate sale to the room as well.
I can’t tell you how happy we are with this teen boy’s bedroom makeover. Landen said that he had no idea how bad his room needed a makeover until he saw the room finished. #missionaccomplished. I know that there will be some things that I will change and add in the upcoming months, but for now, this is where we are. It is so good the way it is, but I will be searching for more vintage suitcases to go under his bed and I need to find a wicker clothes hamper and some small boxes or baskets for the shelving unit. No makeover is ever “done” here. It is always evolving, but I’d say this one is pretty amazing for now.
