I am finding that I am really drawn to vintage Christmas decorations and things that you just can’t go out and buy anymore. I have found some amazing, vintage Christmas items at yard sales and these DIY Vintage Christmas Ornaments are inspired from some vintage homemade ornaments I found at one of those sales.
When I was at this particular yard sale, this little old lady had a box of Christmas items she was selling. I was intrigued by some of the vintage items that were in the box, but when I dug a little more, I found the sweetest, little homemade ornaments.
I thought the tiny reindeer was too cute and the lady told me that she used to make these at Christmas every year. Her story really struck a chord with me because I love making homemade ornaments with my kids every year. We have made so many great memories crafting Christmas things at the dining room table.I thought this ornament was something we could make this year.
I started wondering where I would be able to find the tiny reindeer (the one on her ornament was old and I really wanted to find some like it) and then the lady told me that all the supplies for making these ornaments were in the bottom of the box! What?! Are you kidding me?! (I actually said that to her). SCORE!

There were ample supplies in the box for us to make a few of these ornaments, but I did have to buy more flat toothpicks.
Supplies Needed To Make These DIY Vintage Christmas Ornaments:
Flat Toothpicks
Craft Glue
Old Christmas Cards (Christmas scrapbook paper would work too)
Miniature Figures (Our bag had Santas, deer, angels, snowmen and elves.)
Cotton Balls
I always save Christmas cards from the previous year. I use them for crafts and other things the following year. This project is perfect for using your old Christmas cards. It would be really sweet to make one of these ornaments from a card a friend of family member sent you last year and then add it to that person’s gift this year.
I used the template of the ornament from the yard sale to trace on the cards, but you could make the toothpick structure first and have the same template.
All you need to do is glue your toothpicks (one on top of the other) in a “house” form. I did mine about four toothpicks high. When that is dry, trace it on your card or scrapbook paper. Cut out the template. Then, glue it on the back of the toothpick form you made. Now, pull a tiny piece from the cotton ball. Then, glue it on the ornament for snow and then add whatever miniature you have.
I love the modern vibe our ornaments have with the brighter colored cards we used. There are so many great scrapbook papers out there that you could really make these as custom as you wanted.
Our kids had a blast creating these homemade ornament. We will be adding them to a few gifts this year. There is nothing better than homemade ornaments. Making them with my kids means that memories are being made as well.
