I am always excited to collaborate with other bloggers to bring you tons of inspiration and projects to get your creative juices flowing. This time around, we are bringing you “The Zero Dollar DIY Challenge”! Sarah from Flourish and Knot brought us together to bring you projects with items we already have on hand. We can’t buy anything new to complete them. This is such a great collaboration to be a part of because I will be forced to get all the projects I have done! At the end of this post, you will see all of the other projects from my blog friends. You won’t want to miss any of them because you may have one of the pieces in your home and be inspired to make it over. This DIY Craft Box was so much fun to complete. It didn’t cost me anything and I got a project done!!
I pick up homemade toolboxes whenever I find them. They are great for so many uses and the fact that someone sat down to create them makes them priceless to me.
This particular toolbox has collected a lot of dust in our garage, but it is perfect for my first “The Zero Dollar DIY Challenge” project.
The handle was cut by hand. It isn’t perfect. The wood was put together without mitered edges, but the toolbox functions perfectly.
These characteristics are all the things that draw me to homemade toolboxes. Someone needed a box to carry/hold tools and supplies and used what they had to put one together.

The first thing I did for the craft box was paint it. I always have a stash of paint on hand. It is my #1 favorite DIY tool because you can make the biggest change with it and it doesn’t cost a lot of money.
I chose “Homestead Blue” from Fusion Mineral Paint for the first coat.
After that dried, I went over it with “Picket Fence” from Fusion Mineral Paint. I didn’t coat the toolbox completely with the white paint because I wanted to distress it in the end.
I decided to leave the inside of the toolbox blue.
To make the craft box, I needed to use a scrap piece of wood and a wood dowel. I painted them in “Heirloom Blue” because they were going inside the toolbox.
After the white paint dried, I used sandpaper to rough it up a little and show more of the blue through the white paint.
I cut the scrap piece of wood to fit on the inside edge of the toolbox and put a notch in it to hold the wood dowel that was cut to size.
Now, this homemade toolbox is great as a craft box for all kinds of supplies! The dowel holds washi tape, but would also be great for spools of ribbon.
I like the blue color inside the craft storage and the white on the outside. The different compartments make perfect shelves for all the little craft supplies a person can accumulate. (Not that I would know). 😉
Even though there was a makeover, this craft box still has all of its quirks and character.
Like I said earlier, I pick up these toolboxes whenever I find them and use them for all sorts of things. It was fun to think about a new way to use one this time around.
Having all of the craft supplies in the craft box on the wall like this really makes it a colorful art piece too, don’t ya think?
Do you have wood toolboxes? What do you use them for?
